Uncertainty quantification in three‐dimensional magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium reconstruction via surrogate‐assisted Bayesian inference

open access: yesContributions to Plasma Physics, Volume 63, Issue 5-6, June-July 2023., 2023
Abstract In three‐dimensional (3D) equilibrium, reconstruction defining parameters of an ideal magneto‐hydrodynamic equilibrium are inferred from a set of plasma diagnostic measurements. For the reconstructed parameters, various forms of uncertainty estimates exist within common 3D reconstruction frameworks.

Beltrami fields and knotted vortex structures in incompressible fluid flows

open access: yesBulletin of the London Mathematical Society, Volume 55, Issue 3, Page 1059-1103, June 2023., 2023
Abstract This paper gives a survey on recent results about the existence of knotted vortex structures in incompressible fluids. This includes the proof of Lord Kelvin's conjecture on the existence of knotted vortex tubes in steady Euler flows and a new probabilistic approach to address Arnold's speculation that typical Beltrami fields should exhibit ...

A New Computational Technique for Analytic Treatment of Time‐Fractional Nonlinear Equations Arising in Magneto‐Acoustic Waves

open access: yesMathematical Problems in Engineering, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
This paper presents the study of time‐fractional nonlinear fifth‐order Korteweg–de Vries equations by utilizing an adequate novel technique, namely, the q‐homotopy analysis transform method. The fifth‐order Korteweg–de Vries equation has got its importance in the study of magneto‐sound propagation in plasma, capillary gravity water waves, and the ...

Implementation and validation of guiding centre approximation into ERO2.0

open access: yesContributions to Plasma Physics, Volume 62, Issue 5-6, June‐July 2022., 2022
Abstract The Monte‐Carlo code ERO2.0 uses full orbit resolution to follow impurity particles throughout the plasma volume to determine the local erosion and deposition fluxes on the plasma‐facing components of fusion devices in magnetic confinement fusion.

Heterogeneous design and mechanical analysis of HELIAS 5‐B helium‐cooled pebble bed breeding blanket concept

open access: yesInternational Journal of Energy Research, Volume 46, Issue 3, Page 2748-2770, 10 March 2022., 2022
Summary One of the most challenging objectives of the European research concerning nuclear fusion technology, promoted by the EUROfusion consortium, is to bring stellarator‐type nuclear fusion devices to maturity. To this purpose, studies on a large HELIcal‐axis advanced stellarator (HELIAS), extrapolated from Wendelstein 7‐X and based on a 5‐fold ...

Nuclear Fusion Pattern Recognition by Ensemble Learning

open access: yesComplexity, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
Nuclear fusion is the process by which two or more atomic nuclei join together to form a single heavier nucleus. This is usually accompanied by the release of large quantities of energy. This energy could be cheaper, cleaner, and safer than other technology currently in use.

Impurity transport in a mixed-collisionality stellarator plasma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
A potential threat to the performance of magnetically confined fusion plasmas is the problem of impurity accumulation, which causes the concentration of highly charged impurity ions to rise uncontrollably in the center of the plasma and spoil the energy ...

Stellar ages from stellar rotation [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2008
AbstractOur ability to determine stellar ages from measurements of stellar rotation, hinges on how well we can measure the dependence of rotation on age for stars of different masses. Rotation periods for stars in open clusters are essential to determine the relations between stellar age, rotation, and mass.

Simulating Gyrokinetic Microinstabilities in Stellarator Geometry with GS2 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The nonlinear gyrokinetic code GS2 has been extended to treat non-axisymmetric stellarator geometry. Electromagnetic perturbations and multiple trapped particle regions are allowed.

Optimization of flux-surface density variation in stellarator plasmas with respect to the transport of collisional impurities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Avoiding impurity accumulation is a requirement for steady-state stellarator operation. The accumulation of impurities can be heavily affected by variations in their density on the flux-surface.
