Keeping Pace or Falling Behind? The Depth of Latin American Trade Agreements

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article examines whether Latin American countries are keeping pace with global trends in trade agreement depth or falling behind. Using 681 agreements (1970–2019), we develop the Depth Index of Trade Agreements (DITA) to weight provisions endogenously through factor analysis based on co‐occurrence patterns.

Stepped Spillway Hydraulic Model Investigation

open access: yesTikrit Journal of Engineering Sciences, 2006
An experimental hydraulic model investigation was conducted to evaluate the performance of a stepped overflow spillway . The spillway tested has a standard ogee profile with continuous steps cut into a straight portion of downstream face from tangential ...

Farmers' Preferences for Gene Editing Crops and Influencing Factors

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Gene editing (GE) is gaining momentum worldwide, but limited data on UK farmers' preferences hinders our understanding of its potential impact amid deregulation debates. Based on a survey of 200 English arable farmers, we employ a Latent Class Analysis and Multinomial Logit regressions to investigate current preferences for GE crops.

Jet Flow on Stepped Spillways [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1995
The authors provided interesting data on stepped spillway flows. The writer would like to add some information on flow resistance of skimming flows and discuss the energy dissipation on stepped chutes. It will be shown that the author's results are not dissimilar with results previously obtained by other researchers (table A1).

Human‐in‐the‐Loop Swarms: A Bionic Swarm Approach to Real‐World Soil Mapping

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This article introduces the “Bionic Swarm,” a novel system that lowers the barriers to real‐world swarm validation by abstracting difficult hardware tasks to app‐guided human agents. We demonstrate the system's utility through the experimental validation of a geotechnical soil‐mapping swarm algorithm and show superior performance to baseline approaches

Hydraulic Design of Stepped Spillways

open access: yesJournal of Hydraulic Engineering, 2003
An experimental study on a large model flume using fiber-optical instrumentation indicated that the onset of skimming flow is a function of critical depth, chute angle, and step height. Uniform mixture depths that determine the height of chute sidewalls and uniform equivalent clear water depths are described in terms of a roughness Froude number ...

Causal analysis of trade loss from pathogens: A global study of foot and mouth disease impacts on meat exports

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Our general interest is in global trade loss from livestock pathogens, specifically exports. We adopt a causal inference approach that considers animal disease outbreaks over time as non‐staggered binary treatments with the potential for switching in (infection) and out of treatment (recovery) within the sample period. The outcome evolution of

The effect of gabion steps on the hydraulic jump characteristics downstream of stepped spillways

open access: yesWater Science
Gabion steps on stepped spillways can be a suitable alternative to solid impermeable steps due to their economic advantages, ease of implementation, stability through water pressure reduction, and energy dissipation.

Hydraulic design of stepped spillways

open access: yes, 2002
Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) is becoming an increasingly popular method of constructing and protecting dam embankments. RCC naturally lends itself to a stepped configuration by the construction technique of roller compacting successive horizontal concrete lifts. To date, there have been numerous RCC stepped spillways constructed worldwide, yet there

The role of venture‐financed startups in innovation for US agriculture

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract To evaluate the role played by startup companies in the innovation ecosystem of US agriculture, we compile a unique dataset of 6024 new entrants founded 1987–2019 that details their financing lifecycles, annual economic performance, and patenting activities.
