Comparative evaluation of the stepped wedge design efficiency [PDF]

open access: yesTrials, 2013
The cluster randomised trial (CRT) design is widely used to evaluate interventions targeted at the cluster level and helps alleviate contamination within clusters. CRTs usually require large sample sizes, although matched pair CRTs can limit this problem.

A Validation of Symmetric 2D + T Model Based on Single-Stepped Planing Hull Towing Tank Tests

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2018
In the current article, the hydrodynamic forces of single-stepped planing hulls were evaluated by an analytical method and compared against towing tank tests.

C2α‐carbanion‐protonating glutamate discloses tradeoffs between substrate accommodation and reaction rate in actinobacterial 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Enzymes of the 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase group catalyze the condensation of formyl‐CoA with aldehydes or ketones. Thus, by structural adaptation of active sites, practically any pharmaceutically and industrially important 2‐hydroxyacid could be biotechnologically synthesized. Combining crystal structure analysis, active site mutations and kinetic assays,

Highly efficient stepped wedge designs for clusters of unequal size [PDF]

open access: yesBiometrics, 2020
AbstractThe stepped wedge design (SWD) is a form of cluster randomized trial, usually comparing two treatments, which is divided into time periods and sequences, with clusters allocated to sequences. Typically all sequences start with the standard treatment and end with the new treatment, with the change happening at different times in the different ...

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

The use of permutation tests for the analysis of parallel and stepped-wedge cluster randomized trials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We investigate the use of permutation tests for the analysis of parallel and stepped-wedge cluster randomized trials. Permutation tests for parallel designs with exponential family endpoints have been extensively studied.

Theory of general balance applied to step wedge designs [PDF]

open access: yesStatistics in Medicine, 2018
A standard idealized step‐wedge design satisfies the requirements, in terms of the structure of the observation units, to be considered a balanced design and can be labeled as a criss‐cross design (time crossed with cluster) with replication. As such, Nelder's theory of general balance can be used to decompose the analysis of variance into independent ...

Participatory development and pilot testing of the Makasi intervention: a community-based outreach intervention to improve sub-Saharan and Caribbean immigrants’ empowerment in sexual health

open access: yesBMC Public Health, 2019
Background Sub-Saharan and Caribbean immigrants are particularly affected by HIV in Europe, and recent evidence shows that a large portion of them acquired HIV after arrival.

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Provision of medical supply kits to improve quality of antenatal care in Mozambique: a stepped-wedge cluster randomised trial [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background High levels of maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity remain a daunting reality in many low-income countries. Several interventions delivered during antenatal care have been shown to improve maternal and newborn outcomes, but stockouts ...
