A Postscript to Struck by Stereotype [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Property valuation of commercial real estates is often seen as complicated. The actors think that their valuation method is the best and the results of the valuation depend on whom you ask.

Routing Optimization of Cable‐Driven Octopus‐Inspired Manipulators With Minimal Actuation via Genetic Algorithm and Finite Element Method

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Soft robotic arms are promising for gentle grasping but often rely on bulky actuation systems. This work presents a computational design framework that optimizes tendon number and routing to achieve target grasps with fewer actuators. Validated on an octopus‐inspired underwater arm, the approach enables efficient, underactuated soft manipulators for ...

Thanks, but no thanks: women's avoidance of help-seeking in the context of a dependency-related stereotype [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The stereotype that women are dependent on men is a commonly verbalized, potentially damaging aspect of benevolent sexism. We investigated how women may use behavioral disconfirmation of the personal applicability of the stereotype to negotiate such ...

Enabling Stochastic Dynamic Games for Robotic Swarms

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This paper scales stochastic dynamic games to large swarms of robots through selective agent modeling and variable partial belief space planning. We formulate these games using a belief space variant of iterative Linear Quadratic Gaussian (iLQG). We scale to teams of 50 agents through selective modeling based on the estimated influence of agents ...

A Review of Acceptant Responses to Stereotype Threat: Performance Expectations and Self-Handicapping Strategies

open access: yesAnkara Üniversitesi Dil ve Tarih-Coğrafya Fakültesi Dergisi, 2017
Many minority group members underperform when negative performance related stereotypes about their group are salient. This provisional predicament can be explained by Stereotype Threat which assumes that performance decrements after negative stereotype ...

Sex: Sexual Orientation, Sex Stereotyping, and Title VII [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The United States Supreme Court recently heard oral arguments in Altitude Express v. Zarda, a case that addresses whether Title VII’s prohibition of discrimination “on the basis of sex” prohibits sexual orientation discrimination.

“It Is Much Safer to Be Sparse than Connected”: Safe Control of Robotic Swarm Density Dynamics with PDE Optimization with State Constraints

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This paper proposes a novel control framework to ensure safety of a robotic swarm. A feedback optimization controller is capable of driving the swarm toward a target density while keeping risk‐zone exposure below a safety threshold. Theory and experiments show how safety is more effectively achieved for sparsely connected swarms.
