3D In Vitro Glioma‐Neuron‐Astrocyte Biomimetic Composites Recapitulate Key Molecular Mechanisms Linked to Glioblastoma Multiforme Pathophysiology

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Glioblastoma multiforme is the most devastating and incurable brain tumor. To better study this disease, a 3D model is developed using a hyaluronic acid‐based hydrogel combined with a multicellular approach. This model recapitulates in vivo brain stiffness, cell‐extracellular matrix and cell‐cell interactions and the tumor's hijacking function with the

A Gym for Cells—Direct Laser Writing of Magnetic Multilayered Micro Actuators for Mechanical Stimulation of Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Surface‐attached multilayer micromagnet systems are fabricated by two‐photon crosslinking. The pillar‐shaped micro actuators consist of a soft and flexible surface‐attached cell‐repellent hydrogel layer at the bottom, acting as a hinge and a cell‐adhesive hydrophobic polymer filled with magnetic nanoparticles.

Symbiotic Sympatric Speciation: Compliance with Interaction-driven Phenotype Differentiation from a Single Genotype [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2002
A mechanism of sympatric speciation is presented based on the interaction-induced developmental plasticity of phenotypes. First, phenotypes of individuals with identical genotypes split into a few groups, according to instability in the developmental dynamics that are triggered with the competitive interaction among individuals.

Mechanisms of Male Reproductive Sterility Triggered by Dysbiosis of Intestinal Microorganisms

open access: yesLife
The intestinal microbiota, comprised of bacteria, archaea, and phages, inhabits the gastrointestinal tract of the organism. Male reproductive sterility is currently a prominent topic in medical research. Increasing research suggests that gut microbiota dysbiosis can result in various reproductive health problems.

Ultra‐Effective Light‐Activated Antibacterial Activity via Carboxyl Functionalized Graphene Quantum Dots and Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Carboxyl‐functionalized graphene quantum dots (cGQDs) exhibit high singlet oxygen quantum yield due to strong spin–orbit coupling. cGQDs achieve minimum bactericidal concentration of only 0.4 µg mL−1 against S. aureus under low‐intensity illumination.

Biointerfacing with AgBiS2 Quantum Dots for Pseudocapacitive Photostimulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
It is demonstrated that AgBiS2 quantum dots exhibit unique photoinduced pseudocapacitive charge transfer properties, enabling efficient light‐to‐electrical energy conversion. These quantum dots facilitate enhanced light absorption and transduction when integrated with ZnO nanowires, which serve as an effective charge transport medium.

Biofilm Control by Active Topography with Mucin Coating

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study reports a new antifouling strategy based on a bioinspired design. Mucin coating enhances biofilm control by active topography with beating micron‐sized pillars. Besides the mechanical force of beating pillars, the antibiofilm activities also involve biological factors since mucin coating inhibits swarming motility and c‐di‐GMP synthesis in ...
