The effects of sterol structure upon sterol esterification [PDF]

open access: yesAtherosclerosis, 2010
Cholesterol is esterified in mammals by two enzymes: LCAT (lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase) in plasma and ACAT(1) and ACAT(2) (acyl-CoA cholesterol acyltransferases) in the tissues. We hypothesized that the sterol structure may have significant effects on the outcome of esterification by these enzymes.

A simplified micro-method for quantification of fecal excretion of neutral and acidic sterols for outpatient studies in humans.

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1991
A simple and precise micro-method for measurement of daily fecal excretion of neutral and acidic sterols has been developed which utilizes sitostanol (24-ethyl-5 alpha-cholestane-3 beta-ol) as fecal flow and recovery marker.

Modeling Softening Kinetics at Cellular Scale and Phytochemicals Extractability in Cauliflower under Different Cooking Treatments

open access: yesFoods, 2021
The effects induced by heat on Depurple and Cheddar (Brassica oleracea L. var. botrytis) during boiling, steaming, and sous-vide were investigated to elucidate the role of the basic cellular elements in softening and extractability of sterols and ...

Effects of genotype and sowing date on phytostanol-phytosterol content and agronomic traits in wheat under organic agriculture [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Cereals are an important source of sterols and stanols in the human diet. The present study underlines the effect of genotype and weather conditions in bread wheat, on total sterol and stanol content (TSS), agronomic traits, proteins and ash content ...

Heritability of plasma noncholesterol sterols and relationship to DNA sequence polymorphism in ABCG5 and ABCG8

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2002
The plasma concentrations of cholesterol precursor sterols and plant sterols vary over a 5- to 10-fold range among normolipidemic individuals, and provide indices of the relative rates of cholesterol synthesis and fractional absorption.

Influence of Regulated Deficit Irrigation on Arbequina’s Crop Yield and EVOOs Quality and Sensory Profile

open access: yesAgronomy, 2022
Regulated deficit irrigation in super-high-density (SHD) olive orchards is a well-known strategy to save water and control plant vigor, without decreasing fruit or oil yield.

Esterification of injected epicoprostanol in a human subject

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1969
That a necessary requirement for in vivo esterification of 3-hydroxy sterols is the equatorial conformation of the hydroxyl group has been substantiated by the administration of epicoprostanol-3β-3H (3-OH equatorial) to a man with a complete biliary ...

Microwave-Assisted Saponification Method Followed by Solid-Phase Extraction for the Characterization of Sterols and Dialkyl Ketones in Fats

open access: yesFoods, 2021
Unlike other fields, the methods routinely applied for fats and oils are still tied to traditional, time- and solvent-consuming procedures, such as saponification, column chromatography and thin-layer chromatography.

Lipid components and oxidative status of selected specialty oils [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Many vegetable oils are marketed as specialty oils because of their retained flavors, tastes and distinct characteristics. Specialty oil samples which were commercially produced and retailed were purchased from local superstores in Reading, UK ...

Plant phloem sterol content: forms, putative functions, and implications for phloem-feeding insects

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2013
All eukaryotes contain sterols, which serve as structural components in cell membranes, and as precursors for important hormones. Plant vegetative tissues are known to contain mixtures of sterols, but very little is known about the sterol composition of ...
