หญ้าหวานเป็นพืชที่มีต้นกำเนิดแถบอเมริกาใต้ มีองค์ประกอบที่สำคัญคือสตีวีโอไซด์สารนี้มีความหวานประมาณ 150 ถึง 300 เท่า เมื่อเทียบกับน้ำตาลซูโครส ใบหญ้าหวานจะมีปริมาณสตีวีโอไซด์ประมาณร้อยละ 13.4 การทดลองนี้จึงได้พยายามสกัดสารนี้จากใบหญ้าหวานแห้งด้วยสารตัวทำละลาย 2 ชนิด คือ ไดอ๊อกเซน และน้ำ กระบวนการสกัดด้วยไดอ๊อกเซน เริ่มโดยนำใบหญ้าหวานมาบดให้ละเอียดก่อนจึopenaire +1 more source

Bollettino della Societa italiana di biologia sperimentale, 1985The sterol fraction of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni contains, essentially, the following sterols: stigmasterol (45,8%), beta-sitosterol (39,4%) and campesterol (13,1%). The individual components were separated, after acetylation, by HPLC with absolute methanol as eluant.
