Diversity-Oriented Synthesis of Steviol Glycosides
The Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2018With cheap and easily available mixtures of steviol glycosides as starting materials, a practical method for steviol acquisition has been developed, on the basis of which a facile, diversity-oriented, and economic protocol for the synthesis of structurally defined steviol glycosides was established.

The leaves of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni contain sweet compounds which are glycosides of diterpene derivative steviol (ent-13-hydroxykaur-16-en-19-oic acid). Its main constituents are stevioside (triglucosylated steviol; 13-O-beta-sophorosyl-19-O-beta-glucosyl-steviol) and rebaudioside-A (tetraglucosylated steviol; 2'-O-beta-glucosyl-13-O-beta ...

Identification of Steviol Glucuronide in Human Urine
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2006Stevioside (250 mg capsules) was given three times daily to 10 healthy subjects. Steviol glucuronide (steviol 19-O-beta-D-glucopyranosiduronic acid; MM, 494.58; melting point, 198-199 degrees C) was characterized in the 24 h urine as the only excretion product of oral stevioside by MS, NMR, IR, and UV spectroscopy.

A critical review of the genetic toxicity of steviol and steviol glycosides
Food and Chemical Toxicology, 2008Extracts of the leaves of the stevia plant (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni) are used to sweeten food and beverages in South America, Japan and China. The components responsible for the sweet properties of the plant are glycosides of steviol, primary stevioside (ent-13-hydroxykaur-16-en-18-oic acid), which is 250-300 times sweeter than sucrose and ...

Biosynthesis of steviol from (−)-kaurene
Phytochemistry, 1967Abstract (−)-Kaurene-17-14C was administered to the leaves of a Stevia rebaudiana plant, and radioactive steviol was isolated by extraction, hydrolysis, and chromatography. Its radiochemical purity was demonstrated by dilution with carrier material, recrystallization to constant specificactivity, conversion to the methyl ester, and recrystallization.

Steviol Glycosides: Chemical Diversity, Metabolism, and Function
Journal of Natural Products, 2013Steviol glycosides are a group of highly sweet diterpene glycosides discovered in only a few plant species, most notably the Paraguayan shrub Stevia rebaudiana. During the past few decades, the nutritional and pharmacological benefits of these secondary metabolites have become increasingly apparent.

This study aimed to develop an economically viable enzyme for the optimal production of steviol (S) from stevioside (ST). Of 9 commercially available glycosidases tested, S-producing β-glucosidase (SPGase) was selected and purified 74-fold from Penicillium decumbens naringinase by a three-step column chromatography procedure.
