The Collective Power of Bacteria as a Blueprint for Emergent Intelligence

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Small cells, powerful collectives. Bacteria demonstrate how sophisticated behaviors can emerge from many simple individuals working together. We explore the remarkable world of bacterial communities and the mechanisms that underpin their complex emergent behaviors, enabling impressive adaptability, robustness, and responsiveness to changing ...

Life’s a breach! Ensuring ‘permanence’ in forest carbon sinks under incomplete contract enforcement [PDF]

open access: yes
As carbon sinks, forests play a critical role in helping to mitigate the growing threat from anthropogenic climate change. Forest carbon offsets transacted between GHG emitters in industrialised countries and sellers in developing countries have emerged ...

Resilient Multimodal Fusion for Robust Vulnerability Exploitability Prediction Under Data Degradation

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Secure Fusion‐X harmonizes unstructured NVD descriptions with structured CVSS/CWE/CPE metadata via decision‐level fusion, overcoming the fragility of traditional unimodal models. Automated assessment of software vulnerability exploitability is essential for intelligent cyber defense, yet its effectiveness is often hindered by unstable, delayed, or ...

Persistence and extinction of a stochastic single-species population model in a polluted environment with impulsive toxicant input

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2013
A stochastic single-species population system in a polluted environment with impulsive toxicant input is proposed and studied. Sufficient conditions for extinction, non-persistence in the mean, strong persistence in the mean and stochastic ...

ViTAMIn‐O: Democratizing Computer Vision‐Based Machine Learning for Stem Cell Research

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This study introduces a fully open generalist computer vision model for predicting the differentiation outcomes of stem cell‐based model systems, together with its code‐free deployment platform, ColabViTAMIn‐O. It is benchmarked against various architectures, datasets, and training protocols.

Persistence and extinction for a stochastic logistic model with infinite delay

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2013
This article, studies a stochastic logistic model with infinite delay. Using a phase space, we establish sufficient conditions for the extinction, nonpersistence in the mean, weak persistence, and stochastic permanence.

Dynamics of a Stochastic Single-Species Kolmogorov System Under Markovian Switching

open access: yesMathematics
Understanding the impact of unpredictable environmental fluctuations is crucial in population ecology because such fluctuations are an important feature of natural population systems.

Permanents of doubly stochastic matrices with diagonal submatrices of fixed order

open access: yesLinear Algebra and its Applications, 2004
For positive integers \(r\) and \(n\) with \(n>r\), let \(D_{r, n}=\left( \begin{smallmatrix} 0_r & J\\ J & I_n \end{smallmatrix} \right)\), where the \(J\)s are matrices of \(1\)s of suitable sizes, and let \(\Omega(D_{r,n})\) denote the face of the polytope \(\Omega_{r+n}\) consisting of all \((r+n)\)-square doubly stochastic matrices \(A\leq D_{r, n}

Firm turnover under asymmetric information: Tanzania's agro‐dealer sector

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract We study firm turnover (i.e., entry and exit) and its consumer implications in a market characterized by asymmetric information. Using a three‐round census of agro‐dealers in Tanzania's Morogoro Region, we document annual firm entry and exit rates of 33% and 17%, respectively.
