STRUCTURAL CHANGES IN TRANSIENT STOKES FLOW

The paper examines the unsteady Stokes flow past an axisymmetric body focussing attention on the possibility of flow separation and formation of eddies in the fluid, especially in the transition from one quasisteady flow to another. The oscillatory flows past a sphere and an oblate spheroid are determined.

Abstract Eddies in two dimensional Stokes flow produced by a cylinder or rotelet rotating in the presence of a fixed plane are discussed together with a rotelet interior to a cylinder which is either fixed or rotating. Free eddies are shown to exist for certain locations of the rotelet inside the cylinder.
