Measurement of the Stokes parameters of light

Applied Optics, 1977
We describe a measuring system for determining the state of polarization of a beam of light in terms of its Stokes parameters. The technique which can be fully automated incorporates a monochromator and single photon counting detection and can thus be applied over a large wavelength range for very weak optical signals.

Polarization and the Stokes Parameters

American Journal of Physics, 1954
The Stokes parameters have been found to offer a very convenient method for the description of polarization of both electromagnetic radiation and elementary particles. Their development is presented along with some applications to physical problems.

Experimental determination of generalized Stokes parameters

Optics Letters, 2015
A new technique to determine generalized Stokes parameters by making use of the speckle holographic technique and the two-point intensity correlation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Assuming Gaussian statistics and spatial stationarity, a speckle hologram is generated prior to the fourth-order correlation, i.e., the two-point intensity ...

Statistics of the Stokes parameters

Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 1987
The probability-density functions and lower-order moments of the four Stokes parameters are obtained as a function of the degree of polarization and the mean intensities of the two field components.

Van Cittert–Zernike theorem with Stokes parameters

Optics Letters, 2013
We formulate the van Cittert-Zernike theorem for spatially incoherent partially polarized sources in terms of the traditional polarization (one-point) Stokes parameters and the coherence (two-point) Stokes parameters. This leads to a physically insightful connection between the source polarization and the field coherence.

Vortices in generalized Stokes parameters

SPIE Proceedings, 2010
Presence of vortices/phase singularities has been demonstrated in instantaneous generalized Stokes parameters (IGSP) of the field generated by illuminating a random phase screen with a polarization structured beam. Polarization structuring is achieved by focusing the vector beam with tilt in one of the orthogonal polarization components with respect ...

Modeling the Stokes parameters of surfaces

Optical Society of America Annual Meeting, 1990
Many data on the bidirectional reflectance properties of surfaces have been obtained by Environmental Research Institute of Michigan. The data include polarization properties represented by the bidirectional Stokes parameters. The optical properties of paints and coatings are characterized by a set of empirically derived parameters in the Maxell-ERIM ...
