The Shewanella oneidensis Fic enzyme SoFic targets the switch‐I region of EF‐Tu for AMPylation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fic enzymes mediate diverse post‐translational modifications across all domains of life, including AMPylation. Prokaryotic EF‐Tu can be AMPylated and deAMPylated by the conserved Fic enzyme SoFic. Structural and biochemical approaches were used to characterize the effect of AMPylation on EF‐Tu, SoFic's enzymatic activities, and the enzyme‐target ...

Bluefume (HCN) and EDN® as fumigation alternatives to methy bromide for control of primary stored product pests: Presentation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The presented paper provides preliminary results on the fumigation potential of two preparations: Bluefume (HCN - hydrogen cyanide) and EDN®. (Ethane-dinitrile). Their biological efficacy was tested on Granary weevil (Sitophilus granarius; Curculionidae;

L‐aspartate oxidase provides new insights into fumarate reduction in anaerobic darkness in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Synechocystis strains deficient in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) secrete more succinate than the WT under dark anaerobic conditions, supporting that SDH then primarily acts as SDH, not as a fumarate reductase. L‐aspartate oxidase (Laspo) from Synechocystis is functional under anaerobic conditions, reducing fumarate to succinate.

Trapping of internal and external feeding stored grain beetle pests with two types of pitfall traps: a two-year field study

open access: yesPlant Protection Science, 2016
Pitfall trapping studies are available for particular stored grain pest species. In small farms, the stored grain pest control strategy is rarely species-specific but is often "pest ecological-group-specific" instead. A two-year field study was conducted

COMBINED EFFECT OF BIO-ORGANO-FERTILIZATION AT DIFFERENT N-LEVELS ON: 2-THE DEGREE OF INSECT INFESTATION BY Sitophilus oryzae L. AND Rhizopertha dominica F. [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Plant Protection and Pathology, 2000
Laboratory experiments were carried out to study the degree of infestation by Sitophilus oryzae and Rhizopertha dominica on two wheat varieties, Sakha 8 and Sakha 92 priorly treated in the filed with bio-organo- fertilizers [Azotobacter inoculation (of ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Stored Grain Protection: cases studies in Portugal: Presentation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Considering the edibility of insects’ species associated with storage ecosystem, chemical control methods can be easily replaced by environmental and economically sustainable alternatives.

IMPDH inhibition enhances cytarabine efficacy in SAMHD1‐expressing leukaemia cells via guanine nucleotide depletion

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytarabine is a key therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), but its efficacy is limited by the dNTPase SAMHD1, which hydrolyses its active metabolite. Screening nucleotide biosynthesis inhibitors revealed that IMPDH inhibitors selectively sensitise SAMHD1‐proficient AML cells to cytarabine.

A new approach to acoustic insect detection in grain storage

open access: yesJulius-Kühn-Archiv, 2018
Insect pests in grain storages can cause severe financial losses. Infested grain needs to be treated and can be sold only with lower profit. Intense infestation can lead to contamination with mycotoxins and total loss of stock.

Naturally existing Beauveria on the surface of stored wheat kernels, and their pathogenicity on Rhyzopertha dominica and Sitophilus oryzae adults: Poster [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Entomopathogenic fungi have been investigated to control stored product pests, as an alternative strategy to chemical insecticides. Although many studies evaluated isolates from various sources, few studies surveyed fungi naturally infecting stored ...
