The Mathematical and Physical Inconsistencies of Strain-Gradient Theories

open access: yesMathematics
In this paper, we examine the inherent mathematical and physical inconsistencies of strain-gradient theories. It is shown that strain gradients are not proper measures of deformation, because their corresponding energetically conjugate stresses are non-physical and cannot represent the state of internal stresses in the continuum.

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...

One-Dimensional Large-Strain Nonlinear Consolidation of Overconsolidated Clays with a Threshold Hydraulic Gradient

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2018
The existence of the threshold hydraulic gradient in clays under a low hydraulic gradient has been recognized by many studies. Meanwhile, most nature clays to some extent exist in an overconsolidated state more or less.

Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

Artificial Intelligence in Systemic Sclerosis: Clinical Applications, Challenges, and Future Directions

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare autoimmune disease defined by immune dysregulation, vasculopathy, and progressive fibrosis of the skin and internal organs. Despite advances in care, major complications such as interstitial lung disease (ILD) and myocardial involvement remain the leading causes of morbidity and mortality.

Four simplified gradient elasticity models for the simulation of dispersive wave propagation

open access: yes, 2008
Gradient elasticity theories can be used to simulate dispersive wave propagation as it occurs in heterogeneous materials. Compared to the second-order partial differential equations of classical elasticity, in its most general format gradient elasticity ...

A Brief Note on the Nix–Gao Strain Gradient Plasticity Theory

open access: yesMetals, 2018
The mathematical nature of the flow rule for the strain gradient plasticity theory proposed by Nix and Gao (W.D. Nix and H. Gao, J Mech Phys Solids 46(3), 411(1998)) is discussed based on the paradigm developed by Gurtin and Anand (M.E.

Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

Steady-state crack growth and fracture work based on the theory of mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity

open access: yes, 2003
Mode I steady-state crack growth is analyzed under plane strain conditions in small scale yielding. The elastic-plastic solid is characterized by the mechanism-based strain gradient (MSG) plasticity theory [J. Mech. Phys. Solids 47 (1999) 1239, J.

Gradient flows as a selection procedure for equilibria of nonconvex energies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
For atomistic material models, global minimization gives the wrong qualitative behavior; a theory of equilibrium solutions needs to be defined in different terms.
