Strain localization in polycarbonates deformed at high strain rates

Journal of Polymer Engineering, 2011
Abstract We studied three-dimensional transient large coupled thermomechanical deformations of a polycarbonate (PC) plate with a through-the-thickness inhomogeneity at its centroid. The PC exhibits strain softening followed by strain hardening and its elastic moduli are taken to be functions of strain rate and temperature. The inhomogeneity

Plastic strain localization in Bouligand structures

Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials
The Bouligand structure represents helicoidal stacking of aligned fibers; such a structure is widely observed in biological composites. Despite the progress in characterization of toughening caused by Bouligand arrangement of fibers, the inelastic deformation mechanisms of this structure remain elusive.

Heat conduction effects on strain localization in plane‐strain tension

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 1995
AbstractThe deformation behaviour of a rectangular block under tension is investigated for a rate‐ and temperature‐dependent solid using the finite element method. Isotropic behaviour is assumed and the effect of deformation‐induced heat generation is studied in conjunction with heat conduction. Localization into diffuse necking is examined by applying

Strain Localization in the Dent of a Linepipe

Volume 2: Pipeline Integrity Management, 2014
Steel pipelines used for transporting oil and gas can develop various damages such as mechanical damages, corrosion, wrinkle, and crack. One of the mechanical damages is a dent with or without other defects such as corrosion, gouge, and crack. The dent without other defect is often referred to as plain dent.

Strain localization and porphyroclast rotation

Geology, 2011
It has been debated for decades whether rigid inclusions, such as porphyroclasts and porphyroblasts, do or do not rotate in a softer matrix during deformation. Experiments and numerical simulations with viscous matrix rheologies show ongoing rotation of circular inclusions, whereas using Mohr-Coulomb plasticity results in nonrotation. Because the rocks

Strain localization in amorphous metals

Acta Metallurgica, 1982
Abstract Inhomogeneous flow in metallic glasses is studied in this paper within the context of continuum mechanics. Motivated by similar work for elastic-plastic solids, the possibility of strain localization into a shear band is investigated for a metallic glass which is modelled as a nonlinear viscoelastic solid.

Atomic Mobility and Strain Localization in Amorphous Metals

Physical Review Letters, 2008
Molecular dynamics simulations are employed to investigate the atomic mobility in Ni(50)Zr(50) amorphous alloys under both static conditions and shearing. Diffusion occurs under static conditions via cooperative stringlike motion involving atoms with large volumes.

Local Phonons in Strained Superlattices

1993
Calculations based on a planar force-constant model for strained-layer superlattices (SLSs) are presented. The calculations are compared with the experimental results of Raman scattering by optical phonons in GaP/InP and AlAs/InAs SLSs. The local character of some of the optical phonons of these superlattices has been used to study the electronic ...
