Modelling of strain localization in a large strain context
Structural Engineering and Mechanics, 1996In order to avoid pathological mesh dependency in finite element modelling of strain localization, an isotropic elasto-plastic model with a yield function depending on the Laplacian of the equivalent plastic strain is implemented in a 4-node quadrilateral finite element with one integration point based on a mixed formulation derived from Hu-Washizu ...

Based on previous work of the first author, the local sufficient condition of uniqueness of the solution of the incremental boundary-value problem in generalized elastoplasticity which excludes the possibility of bifurcation state is compared with the local necessary condition for the localization of plastic deformations as a Rice—Rudnicki ...

Local Plastic Strain Measurement by EBSD
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2007Work has been carried out recently, which demonstrates misorientation measurements recorded by using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) enables one to undertake local post mortem plastic strain quantification once the degree of misorientation is calibrated against plastic strain.

Residual strain and local strain distributions in the rabbit atherosclerotic aorta
Journal of Biomechanics, 1995Effect of atherosclerosis on the residual strain in the arterial wall was studied in the rabbit thoracic aorta. Atherosclerosis was induced by feeding a cholesterol diet or by combining denudation of aortic endothelial cells with the diet feeding. Diameter of each aorta in the physiological state was determined from a static pressure-diameter test.

Strain localization phenomena such as necking and shear banding very often occur prior to final failure. They can be predicted by a bifurcation analysis of the system of constitutive and equilibrium equations. Notions like stability, acceleration waves and loss of ellipticity are defined. Finite element simulations can be performed to predict the onset

Strain localization and strain propagation in collapsible solid foams
Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2013Abstract During compression of brittle or ductile solid foams deformation is, on the scale of the cellular microstructure, characterized by local collapse of cells and the development of strain localization bands (‘crushing bands’ or ‘collapse bands’).

Strain localization in polycarbonates deformed at high strain rates
Journal of Polymer Engineering, 2011Abstract We studied three-dimensional transient large coupled thermomechanical deformations of a polycarbonate (PC) plate with a through-the-thickness inhomogeneity at its centroid. The PC exhibits strain softening followed by strain hardening and its elastic moduli are taken to be functions of strain rate and temperature. The inhomogeneity
