Mechanical and material heterogeneity, strain localization and deformation rate effects in crushable expanded polystyrene foams

open access: yesFrontiers in Mechanical Engineering
Low-density expanded polystyrene (EPS) foams are widely used in lightweight energy absorption systems such as helmets due to their ability to readily mold into complex geometries.

Quantum-dot-like states in molybdenum disulfide nanostructures due to the interplay of local surface wrinkling, strain, and dielectric confinement

open access: yes, 2019
The observation of quantum light emission from atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides has opened a new field of applications for these material systems. The corresponding excited charge-carrier localization has been linked to defects and strain,

Rate dependent shear bands in a shear transformation zone model of amorphous solids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We use Shear Transformation Zone (STZ) theory to develop a deformation map for amorphous solids as a function of the imposed shear rate and initial material preparation.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

A Review of Theoretical, Experimental and Numerical Advances on Strain Localization in Geotechnical Materials

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Strain localization is a critical phenomenon in geotechnical materials, serving as a precursor to the failure of engineering structures such as slopes, foundations, and tunnels. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the theoretical, experimental,

Syn-Emplacement Fracturing in the Sandfell Laccolith, Eastern Iceland—Implications for Rhyolite Intrusion Growth and Volcanic Hazards

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2018
Felsic magma commonly pools within shallow mushroom-shaped magmatic intrusions, so-called laccoliths or cryptodomes, which can cause both explosive eruptions and collapse of the volcanic edifice.

Observation of heterogeneities in elastocaloric natural/wastes rubber composites

open access: yeseXPRESS Polymer Letters, 2022
The strain-induced crystallization and elastocaloric properties of various natural rubber (NR)/ground tire rubber (GTR) blends, comprising waste particles of diverse sizes and contents, were investigated.

Strain localization driven by thermal decomposition during seismic shear [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Field and laboratory observations show that shear deformation is often extremely localized at seismic slip rates, with a typical deforming zone width on the order of a few tens of microns. This extreme localization can be understood in terms of thermally

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Correlation of the differential expression of PIK3R1 and its spliced variant, p55α, in pan‐cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PIK3R1 undergoes alternative splicing to generate the isoforms, p85α and p55α. By combining large patient datasets with laboratory experiments, we show that PIK3R1 spliced variants shape cancer behavior. While tumors lose the protective p85α isoform, p55α is overexpressed, changes linked to poorer survival and more pronounced in African American ...
