A blocking view of the stratosphere-troposphere coupling [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research D: Atmospheres, 2014
AbstractDynamical influence from the stratosphere is known to play a role in shaping the wintertime tropospheric circulation patterns. Observations suggest that this influence is strongest following weak and strong polar vortex events, termed sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) and vortex intensification (VI) events, respectively.

Stratosphere-troposphere coupling and annular mode variability in chemistry-climate models [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research D: Atmospheres, 2010
The internal variability and coupling between the stratosphere and troposphere in CCMVal‐2 chemistry‐climate models are evaluated through analysis of the annular mode patterns of variability. Computation of the annular modes in long data sets with secular trends requires refinement of the standard definition of the annular mode, and a more robust ...

Effects of stratosphere-troposphere chemistry coupling on tropospheric ozone [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research D: Atmospheres, 2010
A new, computationally efficient coupled stratosphere‐troposphere chemistry‐climate model (S/T‐CCM) has been developed based on three well‐documented components: a 64‐level general circulation model from the UK Met Office Unified Model, the tropospheric chemistry transport model (STOCHEM), and the UMSLIMCAT stratospheric chemistry module.

The solar cycle and stratosphere–troposphere dynamical coupling

Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, 2005
Abstract Observations and modeling studies support the hypothesis that solar cycle/ozone interactions create temperature and wind anomalies in the tropical upper stratosphere near 1 hPa. During extended winter (October–April), interactions with planetary-scale Rossby waves draw low-latitude stratospheric wind anomalies poleward and downward through ...

Stratosphere–troposphere coupling enhances subseasonal predictability of Northern Eurasian cold spells

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 2022
AbstractHere we explore the stratospheric influence on the predictability of Eurasian cold‐spell events using the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ensemble hindcasts obtained from the Subseasonal‐to‐Seasonal (S2S) archive. To isolate the stratospheric influence, we subsampled two groups of hindcasts according to the strength ...

Stratosphere–Troposphere Coupling during Spring Onset

Journal of Climate, 2006
Abstract The authors perform an observational study of the relation between stratospheric final warmings (SFWs) and the boreal extratropical circulation. SFW events are found to provide a strong organizing influence upon the large-scale circulation of the stratosphere and troposphere during the period of spring onset.

Stratosphere-Troposphere Coupling

2018
This chapter discusses stratosphere-troposphere coupling starting from a very basic background knowledge. Later it focused on the individual role of the Sun and QBO to regulate such coupling. It explores Holton-Tan effect. The combined influence of the Sun and QBO to regulate upper stratospheric polar temperature was also attended.
