The solar cycle and stratosphere–troposphere dynamical coupling

Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, 2005
Abstract Observations and modeling studies support the hypothesis that solar cycle/ozone interactions create temperature and wind anomalies in the tropical upper stratosphere near 1 hPa. During extended winter (October–April), interactions with planetary-scale Rossby waves draw low-latitude stratospheric wind anomalies poleward and downward through ...

The effect of ozone depletion on the Southern Annular Mode and stratosphere‐troposphere coupling

Journal of Geophysical Research D: Atmospheres, 2015
AbstractThe aim of this study is to investigate the influence of ozone depletion and recovery on the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and stratosphere‐troposphere coupling. Using the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research‐United Kingdom Chemistry and Aerosols chemistry‐climate model, we compare reference runs that include forcing due to ...

Stratosphere–Troposphere Coupling during Spring Onset

Journal of Climate, 2006
Abstract The authors perform an observational study of the relation between stratospheric final warmings (SFWs) and the boreal extratropical circulation. SFW events are found to provide a strong organizing influence upon the large-scale circulation of the stratosphere and troposphere during the period of spring onset.

Stratosphere-Troposphere Coupling

2018
This chapter discusses stratosphere-troposphere coupling starting from a very basic background knowledge. Later it focused on the individual role of the Sun and QBO to regulate such coupling. It explores Holton-Tan effect. The combined influence of the Sun and QBO to regulate upper stratospheric polar temperature was also attended.

Stratosphere–Troposphere Coupling and Links with Eurasian Land Surface Variability

Journal of Climate, 2007
Abstract A diagnostic of Northern Hemisphere winter extratropical stratosphere–troposphere interactions is presented to facilitate the study of stratosphere–troposphere coupling and to examine what might influence these interactions.

A Study of Stratosphere-troposphere Coupling with an Aquaplanet Model

2011
The coupling between stratosphere and troposphere (ST) has been studied extensively using simple circulation models. It is known that the ozone-rich stratosphere interact with the troposphere through both radiative and dynamical processes. However, many of the models used in these studies only assume a slab ocean with a fixed sea surface temperature ...

Biases in stratosphere-troposphere coupling processes in S2S forecast systems

Two-way coupling between the stratosphere and troposphere is recognized as an important source of subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) predictability. Extratropical coupling between the stratosphere and the surface may modulate the tropospheric circulation in predictable ways and/or provide forecast windows of opportunity.
