Towards a More Earth‐Like Circulation in Idealized Models

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2018
Idealized models are useful for the investigation of dynamical phenomena in which physical processes play a secondary role. Typically, such models employ highly idealized topography and zonally symmetric equilibrium temperatures as forcings.

Simulation of the ENSO influence on the extra-tropical middle atmosphere

open access: yesEarth, Planets and Space, 2019
The impact of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the Northern Hemisphere mid-winter zonal wind, temperature, and stationary planetary waves (SPWs) is evaluated using the Middle and Upper Atmosphere Model and Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for ...

Stratosphere–Troposphere Coupling During Cold Air Outbreaks in the Eastern United States

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 16, 28 August 2026.
Abstract Cold air outbreaks (CAOs) are extreme weather events characterized by the equatorward displacement of polar air. This study investigates CAOs occurring along the East Coast of the US and establishes that approximately 16% are driven by stratosphere‐troposphere coupling through wave dynamics.

Vertical Redistribution of Ozone Precursor Proxies During Typhoon Peripheral Periods: Insights From MAX‐DOAS and GEOS‐Chem

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 16, 28 August 2026.
Abstract Typhoon peripheral conditions modulate the formation and atmospheric fate of ozone precursors, yet the vertical distribution and the underlying physical‐chemical drivers remain less constrained. Here, we examine the vertical profiles of ozone precursor proxies, including formaldehyde (HCHO), glyoxal (CHOCHO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), in the

Stratospheric Impacts on Weather Regimes Following the 2018 and 2019 Sudden Stratospheric Warmings

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Major disruptions of the stratospheric polar vortex can improve subseasonal forecast skill for surface climate, as negative North Atlantic Oscillation‐like (NAO−) states can follow sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs).

The Role of Lightning in Atmospheric Chemistry

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 16, 28 August 2026.
Abstract Lightning has important effects on atmospheric constituents in primarily the middle and upper troposphere. We summarize the effects of lightning on atmospheric chemistry that have been published since the last major review in 2007. The estimates of NOx production by lightning (LNOx) are based on five methods: theoretical/laboratory estimates ...

Externally‐Forced Changes to Southern Hemisphere Stratosphere‐Troposphere Coupling Variability

open access: yesEarth's Future
Stratosphere‐troposphere coupling (STC) in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) occurs primarily from austral spring to summer, and the dominant mode of variability in this vertical coupling (the “STC mode”) represents the timing of the seasonal transition of ...

NOx and HCHO in Hot Extremes Observed From Space and Their Influences on Urban Populations: A Case Study in Houston, TX (USA)

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 16, 28 August 2026.
Abstract Hot extremes have increased globally and on a regional scale. Traditional data processing methods to understand air quality changes in hot extremes may not adequately describe variations in directly emitted air pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx) or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their influence on secondary species such as ozone (O3).

Model Sensitivities of Biomass‐Burning Aerosol Chemical Aging, Sulfate Formation, and Cloud Droplet Activation in the Southeastern Atlantic Using CESM and E3SM

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 15, 16 August 2026.
Abstract Biomass‐burning smoke drives large uncertainty in climate projections of the Earth's radiative balance. This is due to the chemical and physical evolution of smoke and its impact on clouds and radiation. Here we focus on the southeastern Atlantic region and its inflow of African biomass‐burning smoke during August 2017.

A GEO‐LEO Imager Data Set for Characterizing Rapid Changes of Global Aerosol Properties

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 15, 16 August 2026.
Abstract Aerosols, the ubiquitous small particulates in our atmosphere, have climate, air quality, and/or other impacts far from their original sources. The Dark Target Algorithm (DTA), originally developed for retrieving aerosol properties from satellite imagers in Low‐Earth Orbit (LEO), has been ported to imagers in Geostationary (GEO) orbit.
