Influence of the stratospheric polar vortex on the tropospheric vortex dynamics in winter
26th International Symposium on Atmospheric and Ocean Optics, Atmospheric Physics, 2020The influence of the stratospheric polar vortex on the tropospheric vortex begins to appear in November, is significantly enhanced from December to February and decreases in March. The strong stratospheric polar vortex centered over the North Pole enhances the tropospheric one, which largely repeats the shape and location of the stratospheric vortex ...

The stratospheric polar vortex in winter
Journal of Geophysical Research, 1959In winter the polar stratospheric air within the earth's shadow forms the core of an intense ‘cold low’ which extends from about 10 km to at least 50 km and possibly to the base of the ionosphere. Compared with the tropospheric general circulation, this vortex seems to be remarkably stable, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere.

Barotropic decelerations of the southern stratospheric polar vortex
Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 2017The northern and southern polar vortices are subject to quite different dynamical forcings, with the variability of the northern polar vortex much more dominated by baroclinic wave processes. Some recent works describe a barotropic structure in vortex‐splitting sudden stratospheric warming events (SSWs).

Visualization of stratospheric ozone depletion and the polar vortex
Proceedings Visualization '93, 2002Direct analysis of spacecraft observations of stratospheric ozone yields information about the morphology of annual austral depletion. Visual correlation of ozone with other atmospheric data illustrates the diurnal dynamics of the polar vortex and contributions from the upper troposphere, including the formation and breakup of the depletion region each

On the Motion of Air through the Stratospheric Polar Vortex
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1994Abstract Trajectory calculations using horizontal winds from the U.K. Meteorological Office data assimilation system and vertical velocities from a radiation calculation are used to simulate the three-dimensional motion of air through the stratospheric polar vortex for Northern Hemisphere (NH) and Southern Hemisphere (SH) winters since the launch of ...

Energetics of a “Minor Breakdown” of the Stratospheric Polar Night Vortex
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1969Abstract An investigation of the kinetic energy budget of a “minor breakdown” of the stratospheric polar night vortex is performed. The computation covers the period 15 November-15 December 1958, for the 100–50 mb layer north of 40N. Vertical motions and mean meridional circulations are computed from the thermodynamic equation.

The Morphology of the Stratospheric Polar Vortex Under Stratospheric Aerosol Intervention Scenarios
ABSTRACTEven though it is widely acknowledged that the stratospheric polar vortex (SPV) strengthens under stratospheric aerosol intervention (SAI), little is known about how the SPV's size, duration, location, and edge change under SAI compared to the present‐day climate.

Temperature variability in the upper polar stratosphere depending on the polar vortex strength
26th International Symposium on Atmospheric and Ocean Optics, Atmospheric Physics, 2020The polar vortex strengthening leads not only to a temperature decrease in the lower stratosphere, but also to its increase in the upper stratosphere inside the vortex. Over the Antarctic, this dependence is observed from autumn to spring: in the upper stratosphere high temperatures are observed inside the polar vortex, and low temperatures occur ...
