Abstract The sensitivity of the wintertime tropospheric circulation to changes in the strength of the Northern Hemisphere stratospheric polar vortex is studied using one of the latest versions of the ECMWF model. Three sets of experiments were carried out: one control integration and two integrations in which the strength of the ...

Stratospheric Meteorological Conditions in the Arctic Polar Vortex, 1991 to 1992
Science, 1993Stratospheric meteorological conditions during the Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition II (AASE II) presented excellent observational opportunities from Bangor, Maine, because the polar vortex was located over southeastern Canada for significant periods during the 1991-1992 winter.

Climatology of the Stratospheric Polar Vortex and Planetary Wave Breaking
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1988The distribution of Ertel's potential vorticity (PV) on the 850 K isentropic surface is used to establish a climatology for the transient evolution of the planetary scale circulation in the Northern Hemisphere winter midstratosphere. PV distributions are computed from gridded NMC daily temperature and height maps for the 10 and 30 mb levels, and show ...

Stratospheric Polar Vortex Splitting in December 2009
Atmosphere-Ocean, 2013AbstractThe 2009–10 Arctic stratospheric winter, in comparison with other recent winters, is mainly characterized by a major Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) in late January associated with planetary wavenumber 1. This event led to a large increase in the temperature of the polar stratosphere and to the reversal of the zonal wind.

Computations of diabatic descent in the stratospheric polar vortex
Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 1994A radiation model, together with National Meteorological Center temperature observations, was used to compute daily net heating rates in the northern hemisphere (NH) for the Arctic late fall and winter periods of both 1988–1989 and 1991–1992 and in the southern hemisphere (SH) for the Antarctic fall and winters of 1987 and 1992.

Antarctic slope winds and the polar stratospheric vortex
Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1994Abstract A wave mean-flow interaction model is used to investigate the coupling of the Antarctic slope winds and the polar vortex in the lower stratosphere in winter. The model is restricted to the Antarctic domain but synoptic waves of fixed frequency and zonal wavenumber can be prescribed at the northern boundary.

The stratospheric polar vortex and sub-vortex: fluid dynamics and midlatitude ozone loss
Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series A: Physical and Engineering Sciences, 1995Abstract It has been suggested on the basis of certain chemical observations that the wintertime stratospheric polar vortex might act as a chemical processor, or flow reactor, through which large amounts of air - of the order of one vortex mass per month or three vortex masses per winter - flow downwards and then outwards to middle ...

Different ENSO teleconnections and their effects on the stratospheric polar vortex
Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2008Reanalysis data are used to study the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signal in the troposphere and stratosphere during the late fall to midwinter period. Warm ENSO events have extratropical tropospheric teleconnections that increase the wave 1 eddies and reduce the wave 2 eddies, as compared to cold ENSO.

Analysis of state of polar vortex in the stratosphere
This poster is devoted to analysis of polar vortex state in the stratosphere. We use the ERA-5 data of daily averages of zonal wind poleward of 60° N at the selected layers from 250 hPa up to 1 hPa in the winter period 1979/80 (October-March). We compute the latitudinal average of longitudinal averages U. Thus we obtain one value per day.openaire +1 more source
