Ensemble reliability and the signal‐to‐noise paradox in ECMWF subseasonal forecasts

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We derive a general expression for the ratio of predictable components (RPC) in terms of correlation, spread–error ratio, and total variance ratio. Physical constraints on the admissible solutions (i.e., real‐valued and non‐negative variances) provide a mechanism to identify statistically paradoxical sample combinations of reliability and correlation ...

Tropospheric forcing of the boreal polar vortex splitting in January 2003 [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2010
The dynamical evolution of the relatively warm stratospheric winter season 2002–2003 in the Northern Hemisphere was studied and compared with the cold winter 2004–2005 based on NCEP-Reanalyses.

Rossby Waves in Total Ozone over the Arctic in 2000–2021

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2022
The purpose of this work is to study Rossby wave parameters in total ozone over the Arctic in 2000–2021. We consider the averages in the January–March period, when stratospheric trace gases (including ozone) in sudden stratospheric warming events are ...

Scaling turbulence drives the general circulation

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The NOAA Gulfstream SP4, which deployed the GPS dropsondes over the NE Pacific Ocean as part of the Winter Storms Project during the January–March periods of 2004, 2005 and 2006. Abstract Statistical multifractal analysis of airborne and dropsonde observations is used to show that persistence of velocity after molecular collisions breaks the continuous

Impact of Weak‐Constraint Four‐Dimensional Variational data assimilation on the prediction of a sudden stratospheric warming event in 2024

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The Weak‐Constraint Four‐Dimensional Variational (WC‐4DVAR) system markedly improved the analysis and forecasting of the 2024 sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event. It reduced biases and enhanced 7–9 day predictions of temperature across the SSW life cycle, with the most pronounced gains for winds also during the critical onset period.

A three-dimensional model comparison of PSC processing during the Arctic winters of 1991/1992 and 1992/1993 [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 1994
A three-dimensional transport model has been used to compare and contrast the extent of processing by polar stratospheric clouds during the northern hemisphere winters of 1991/1992 and 1992/1993.

Revisiting the Contrasting Response of Polar Stratosphere to the Eastern and Central Pacific El Niños

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2022
El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) invokes the release of a large amount of heat and moisture into the tropical atmosphere, inducing circulation anomalies.

Asymmetry in the effect of North Atlantic sea surface temperature on the eddy‐driven jet

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Projections of climate over Europe and the Atlantic are uncertain due to the uncertainty surrounding future changes in North Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs). Here, we demonstrate that warming in the North Atlantic Ocean is linked to a transition to a negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation, as well as to an equatorward displacement of

Perfluorohexanone for Clean Fire Suppression: Mechanisms, System Design, Applications, and Future Directions

open access: yesSafety Science and Technology, EarlyView.
Driven by halon and high GWP agent phase out, perfluorohexanone is increasingly deployed in enclosures such as data centers, marine machinery spaces, and industrial process lines. This review summarizes application performance, discharge and distribution design, material compatibility, and byproduct control and maps practical gaps for large volume and ...

Stratosphere-troposphere coupling during stratospheric extremes in the 2022/23 winter

open access: yesWeather and Climate Extremes, 2023
Using the ERA5 reanalysis, sea surface temperature, sea ice observations, and the real-time multivariate Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) index, the evolution of the stratospheric extreme circulation in the winter of 2022/2023 is explored.
