Attributing the Stratospheric Impacts From the Water‐Rich Explosive Hunga Volcanic Eruption of 2022

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Abstract The January 2022 Hunga volcanic eruption injected an unprecedented ∼150 Tg of water vapor (H2 ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$O) and ∼0.4 Tg of sulfur dioxide (SO2 ${\text{SO}}_{2}$) into the stratosphere. Observational studies confirm that this perturbation triggered significant changes in stratospheric composition and dynamics.

CYCLOP Revegoca: The First Documented Cyclone Formed From Locally Originating Potential Intensity Over the Southwestern South Atlantic

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Abstract On 9 December 2025, an atypical synoptic cyclone developed near the borders of Paraguay, Argentina, and southern Brazil, triggering severe weather across south‐southeastern Brazil. Unlike typical South Atlantic extratropical cyclones, which intensify near the coast, this system originated inland and underwent explosive cyclogenesis without a ...

Influence of the upper stratosphere on polar vortex variability

open access: yes, 2019
The polar vortex is a band of strong westerly winds that forms each winter and encircles the pole, high up in the atmosphere in a region known as the stratosphere. However this band of winds is not stable in the northern hemisphere, and often dramatically disintegrates in events known as sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs).

Opposite Trends in the Northern Hemisphere Stratosphere Between Mid‐Winter and Early Spring Linked to Surface Temperature Anomalies

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Trends in the coupled stratosphere‐troposphere system during the 1979–2022 period are investigated in the Northern Hemisphere using reanalysis datasets.

Transient Flow Patterns of an Annular-like Stratospheric Polar Vortex

open access: yesWeather and Climate Dynamics
Abstract. A two-component study is undertaken of flow features associated with the wintertime polar-night vortex at upper-stratospheric levels. First, three cursory case studies are presented based upon reanalysis data. They suggest that: – (a) sub-planetary scale flow features are pervasive, tend to occur near the periphery of the vortex, and are ...

Connections between low- and high- frequency variabilities of stratospheric northern annular mode and Arctic ozone depletion

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters
Previous studies have demonstrated a dynamical linkage between the ozone and stratospheric polar vortex strength, but only a few have mentioned the persistence of the anomalous vortex.

A Helicity‐Based Analysis of the Stratospheric Polar Vortex Evolution

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres
Abstract The Arctic atmosphere in the winter months of the Northern Hemisphere is influenced by a stratospheric polar vortex, characterized by strong westerly circumpolar winds and extremely low temperatures. These vortices impact surface weather in various ways, and their dynamics may be affected by recent anthropogenic climate ...

A Study of the Low-Ozone Episode over Scandinavia and Northwestern Russia in March 2025

open access: yesAtmosphere
Following a very cold first half of the Arctic stratosphere winter of 2024–2025, the stratospheric polar vortex weakened from late February. The increase in the polar lower stratosphere temperature led to a decrease in the polar stratospheric cloud (PSC)
