Abstract Objective This study compiled data sets from multiple research efforts from 2010 to 2018 to describe patterns in the presence and density of larval lampreys in deep water habitats across 430 river kilometers of the lower and middle main‐stem Columbia River.

Private Equity and Local Public Finances
ABSTRACT We study the economic impact of private equity (PE) investments on local governments, which are important corporate stakeholders. Examining over 11,000 deals and private firm data in Europe, we document that target firms' effective tax rates and total tax expenses decrease by 15% and 13% after PE deals.

Setting the stones to restore and monitor European flat oyster reefs in the German North Sea
Abstract Ecological restoration includes specific technical phases over the course of an ecosystem recovery process. In the marine environment and for oyster reef restoration, the installation and implementation of pilot reefs close the gap between feasibility studies with small‐scale experiments and designated upscaling for marine conservation ...

Depth‐limiting resistant layers restrict dimensions and positions of estuarine channels and bars
Future sea‐level rise is expected to significantly change channel dynamics in many estuaries that provide access to mainports and densely inhabited coastal areas. Here we show that channel dimensions strongly depend on the presence of resistant layers in the subsurface.

Anomaly Analysis of Brane-Antibrane Systems [PDF]
String theories with branes can often be generalized by adding brane-antibrane pairs. We explore the cancellation of anomalies in this more general context, extending the familiar anomaly-cancelling mechanisms, both for ten-dimensional string theories ...

Abstract Groundwater abstraction and drainage are considered to be the main drivers for the salinization of low‐lying coastal groundwater systems, while the role of past boundary conditions is less clear. In this study, 3‐D paleo‐hydrogeological variable‐density groundwater flow and salt transport modeling (“paleo‐modeling”) is applied to reconstruct ...

A detailed stratigraphic and geotechnical investigation of the uppermost 50 m below the sea floor was carried out for parts of the German North Sea sector using combined information from shallow seismic reflection surveys, 50‐m‐long sediment cores and cone penetration tests covering an area of ~150 km2.

Groundwater ages, recharge conditions and hydrochemical evolution of a barrier island freshwater lens (Spiekeroog, Northern Germany) [PDF]
Freshwater lenses below barrier islands are dynamic systems affected by changes in morphodynamic patterns, groundwater recharge and discharge. They are also vulnerable to pollution and overabstraction of groundwater.

The influence of island dynamics and characteristics on taxonomic diversity, particularly species richness, are well studied. Yet, our knowledge on the influence of island dynamics and characteristics on other facets of diversity, namely functional and phylogenetic diversity, is limited, constraining our understanding of assembly processes on islands ...
