Maternal deaths from sepsis in the Nordic countries during 2005–2021: A descriptive study

open access: yesActa Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, EarlyView.
We found sepsis to be the fifth leading cause of maternal deaths during 2005‐2021 in the Nordic countries. Abstract Introduction Maternal sepsis is a heterogenous condition which can arise from several different infections during and after pregnancy. Common for all etiologies is a high mortality rate.

Characterization of Streptococcus gordonii prophage PH15: complete genome sequence and functional analysis of phage-encoded integrase and endolysin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Streptococcus gordonii OMZ1039, isolated from supragingival dental plaque, was found to harbour a prophage, PH15, whose excision could be induced by mitomycin treatment. Phage PH15 belongs to the Siphoviridae.

Accuracy of Inflammatory Biomarkers for Ruling out Invasive Bacterial Infections in Young Febrile Infants

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim To investigate the diagnostic accuracy of procalcitonin (PCT), C‐reactive protein (CRP) and absolute neutrophil count (ANC) to rule out invasive bacterial infections (IBI) in well‐appearing febrile infants aged ≤ 60 days. Methods Multicentre study of infants ≤ 60 days with fever without source.

Antibiotic susceptibility of Streptococcus species that cause pharyngitis in children

open access: yesDiyala Journal of Medicine
Background: Group A Streptococcus (GAS) significantly impacts global health, especially among children aged 5–14 years, causing approximately 288 million episodes of sore throat annually and resulting in around 100,000 disability-adjusted life years ...

A common theme in interaction of bacterial immunoglobulin-binding proteins with immunoglobulins illustrated in the equine system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The M protein of Streptococcus equi subsp. equi known as fibrinogen-binding protein (FgBP) is a cell wall-associated protein with antiphagocytic activity that binds IgG. Recombinant versions of the seven equine IgG subclasses were used to investigate the

Clusterin and pentraxin 3 are markers of severity during febrile neutropenia in adults with haematological malignancies receiving intensive chemotherapy

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
During febrile neutropenia in patients with haematological malignancies, pentraxin 3 (PTX3), a soluble innate immunity receptor, increases with severe sepsis, while clusterin, a chaperon protein involved in extracellular histones clearance, decreases in patients with quick SOFA score (qSOFA) ≥2.

Thermoregulation of Capsule Production by Streptococcus pyogenes

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
The capsule of Streptococcus pyogenes serves as an adhesin as well as an anti-phagocytic factor by binding to CD44 on keratinocytes of the pharyngeal mucosa and the skin, the main entry sites of the pathogen. We discovered that S. pyogenes HSC5 and MGAS315 strains are further thermoregulated for capsule production at a post-transcriptional level in ...

Macrophage Efferocytosis as a Therapeutic Strategy in Intervertebral Disc Degeneration

open access: yesCell Proliferation, EarlyView.
Macrophages, integral to degenerated intervertebral discs, play a critical role in disc degeneration. By performing efferocytosis, they clear apoptotic cells. This article explores the process of efferocytosis, its molecular mechanisms, potential therapeutic implications for intervertebral disc degeneration and future strategies for targeted treatments.

Respiratory admissions and impact of COVID‐19 lockdowns for children with severe cerebral palsy

open access: yesDevelopmental Medicine &Child Neurology, EarlyView.
In a population cohort of children with severe cerebral palsy, there was a reduced frequency of hospitalization for respiratory illness during periods of restricted social contact, implemented to reduce transmission of COVID‐19. This mirrored trends in the wider population and underlines the importance of community viral transmission in these children.
