Ursolic acid inhibits multi-species biofilms developed by Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguinis, and Streptococcus gordonii

Archives of Oral Biology, 2021
The current study aimed to assess the antimicrobial activity of ursolic acid (UA) against multi-species biofilms formed by Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguinis, and Streptococcus gordonii, as well as to measure its biocompatibility.Crystal violet staining, CFU counting, CCK-8 assays and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were applied to ...

Exposure of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguinis to blue light in an oral biofilm model

Lasers in Medical Science, 2019
The potential anti-cariogenic effect of blue light was evaluated using an oral biofilm model. Two species, Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguinis, were cultivated ex vivo on bovine enamel blocks for 24 h, either separately or mixed together, then exposed to blue light (wavelengths 400-500 nm) using 112 J/cm2.

Susceptibility of planktonic versus attached Streptococcus sanguinis cells to chlorhexidine

Clinical Oral Investigations, 2003
The effect of chlorhexidine (CHX) on the viability of Streptococcus sanguinis was investigated in a preclinical biofilm model separately on cells in the planktonic or attached life form. Saliva-coated human enamel and glass slides were exposed to the streptococci suspended in sterile saliva for 30 min and 60 min in the flow chamber system.

Streptococcus mutans Extracellular Vesicles Regulate Early Streptococcus sanguinis Nanoadhesion

Journal of Dental Research
Dental caries remains a globally prevalent disease, driven by microbial dysbiosis and competitive ecological shifts within the oral biofilm. A key interaction in this context is the antagonism between Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguinis ...
