Functional comparison of EncB and EncC cargo proteins in iron storage within the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Encapsulins are protein nanocompartments that play an important role in iron storage. In the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin system, two cargo proteins called EncB and EncC contribute to iron mineralization. Here, we show that EncB and EncC generate iron‐containing minerals with distinct chemical compositions, suggesting that the composition of stored ...

Interlaminar shear stress function for adhesively bonded multi-layer metal laminates

open access: yes, 2018
A new analytical model is proposed for the estimation of interlaminar shear stress in adhesively bonded metal laminates consisting of an arbitrary number of layers. The interface shear stress in the laminates is related to the difference in average axial

‘Guide and Prejudice’— How Argonautes recognize targets across domains of life

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Argonaute proteins use short nucleic‐acid guides to locate and regulate specific targets across all domains of life. Despite striking diversity—from human gene silencing to bacterial immune defence—all Argonautes share a conserved three‐stage recognition logic: guide‐directed sampling, progressive target pairing with a conformational checkpoint and ...

From junk to function — How weak selection in eukaryotes builds new parts and drives genomic complexity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...

Bacterial stress rewires diatom chronobiology and ecosystem function

open access: yesiScience
Summary: Diatoms are vital primary producers in marine ecosystems and play a key role in blue carbon sequestration. Although their circadian rhythms have been studied in isolation, how these rhythms are modulated by co-occurring bacteria remains unknown.

Leucine‐rich glioma inactivated 1 (LGI1) is a ganglioside‐binding protein

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neuronal hyperexcitability associated with a decrease/absence of the extracellular protein LGI1 has been suggested to be primarily due to the downregulation of Kv1 channel expression. The molecular mechanisms underlying this decrease have not yet been elucidated.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Effects of Smiling on Nursing Student Stress and Correlates with Immune Function

open access: yes, 2022
Stress is linked to many different pathological disorders in various body systems and can trigger inflammation which in turn correlates with certain disease states (Yaribeygi et al., 2017).

THE DYNAMIC INDEX CHANGES OF THE CONTRACTILE ACTIVITY OF DUODENAL AND JEJUNA DURING IMMOBILIZED STRESS

open access: yesActa Biomedica Scientifica, 2012
The dynamic contractile activity of duodenal and jejuna was studied during daily chronic one-hour stress in experiment on the dogs. It was revealed, that the stress leads to the increasing index of the contractile activity of experimental areas, which is

Circular RNA expression landscapes in myelodysplastic neoplasms: Associations with mutational signatures and disease progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative study, the abundance of circular RNA molecules in bone marrow stem cells was found to be elevated in patients with high‐risk myelodysplastic neoplasms, and to be associated with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.
