Comparing clinical laboratory beta‐hydroxybutyrate testing of vitreous humor against toxicological blood analyses in ketoacidosis deaths

open access: yesJournal of Forensic Sciences, EarlyView.
Abstract Beta‐hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is used in investigations to detect ketoacidotic states. Standard chromatographic methods of analysis of blood have traditionally been used to assess BHB levels. More recently, vitreous humor has been an alternative matrix/body fluid in clinical laboratory testing.

Blubber Thickening Driven by UCP1 Inactivation: Insights from a Cetacean‐Like Transgenic Mouse Model

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
UCP1 inactivation of cetaceans in mice drives BAT whitening and iWAT hyperplasia, promoting fat accumulation for aquatic adaptation. Abstract Cetaceans possess thick blubber, a specialized adipose tissue essential for thermal insulation, a streamlined body form, energy storage, and buoyancy. However, the mechanisms that underpin this adaptation are not

Impact of Metformin and Diabetes on Tumor Response to Total Neoadjuvant Therapy in Advanced Rectal Cancer: A Multicenter Retrospective Cohort Study

open access: yesAsia-Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology, EarlyView.
In advanced rectal cancer patients receiving total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT), overall tumor response did not differ by diabetes status or metformin use. However, among diabetic patients, metformin use was associated with higher overall complete response rates. These findings suggest a potential benefit of metformin in enhancing TNT response in diabetic
