In order to examine the organization of nigrostriatal projections in the primate, the retrograde tracers Lucifer Yellow conjugated to dextran amines and horseradish peroxidase conjugated to wheatgerm agglutinin were injected into different regions of the dorsolateral and ventral striatum.

A model for the functioning of the striatum
Biological Cybernetics, 1993A model is presented for the operation of the striatum. The model posits that the basal ganglia are responsible for driving smooth transitions of state for an organism. We propose that this is accomplished through the computation of a potential function within the striatum on which a gradient descent is performed toward the goal state.

The role of the dorsal striatum in choice impulsivity
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2018It has long been recognized that the dorsal striatum is an essential brain region for control of action selection based on action–outcome contingency learning, particularly when the available actions are bound to rewarding outcomes.

A 31-year-old woman presented with a 7-month history of dark-colour urine, pruritus and xanthoma striatum palmare. Physical examination revealed diffuse yellowish and irregular plaques deposited over her fingers and palmar creases (figure 1). Skin biopsy was performed, which revealed accumulation of foam cells in the dermis (figure 2, arrow ).

Habit Formation and the Striatum
2016Data from experimental animals and human subjects has provided convergent evidence for the key role of the striatum in the formation of stimulus-response habits. Habits can be distinguished from associative memories that support goal-directed actions based on their insensitivity to reward devaluation and contingency degradation.

The associative striatum: cortical and thalamic projections to the dorsocentral striatum in rats
Brain Research, 2003Corticostriatal projections to the dorsocentral striatum (DCS) were investigated using retrograde fluorescent axonal tracing. The DCS is of interest because of its role in directed attention and recovery from multimodal hemispatial neglect following cortical lesions of medial agranular cortex (AGm), an association area that is its major source of ...

The associative striatum: Organization of cortical projections to the dorsocentral striatum in rats
Journal of Comparative Neurology, 2003AbstractThe dorsocentral striatum (DCS) is the major site of input from medial agranular cortex (AGm) and has been implicated as an associative striatal area that is part of a cortical‐subcortical circuit involved in multimodal spatial functions involving directed attention. Anterograde axonal tracing was used to investigate the spatial organization of

The striatum is the major division of the basal ganglia, a group of subcortical nuclei involved in a variety of processes including motor, associative, cognitive and mnemonic functions. The dorsal division of the basal ganglia consists of the striatum, the globus pallidus (GP, external segment of the globus pallidus, or GPe, in primates ...

Synaptic organization of the striatum
Journal of Electron Microscopy Technique, 1988AbstractThe striatum, the main component of the basal ganglia, is composed of mainly one type of neuron, the so‐called medium spiny neuron. This neuron cell type, which constitutes over 90% of striatal neurons, is the major output neuron of the striatum.
