RECENT work1 has shown that the phanerogamic root parasite Striga hermonthica Benth. (witchweed), which causes considerable crop losses to sorghum (Sorghum vulgare Pers.) in the Sudan and elsewhere, can be controlled by spraying the young crop with hormone weed-killers of 2,4-D type two to three weeks after sowing.

Intraspecific Physiological Variants of Striga hermonthica

SUMMARYPreliminary evidence is presented in this study for the existence of (1) intraspecific physiological variants of Striga hermonthica, with Gabob population as the most responsive strain to a range of Sorghum bicolor cultivars, and (2) a local Sudanese sorghum cultivar called Tetron with broad-spectrum resistance to striga.
