Duality in compactified string theory

We reformulate compactified strings in order to manifest its duality under the transformation {ital R}{r arrow}{alpha}{prime}/{ital R}. New degrees of freedom {ital y}{sup {ital i}} 's are introduced. The duality for the nonperturbative effects of orbifolds is also proved using the new formalism.

Sigma-model duality and duality transformations in string theory

Duality symmetries in the partition functions of closed strings compactified on tori and orbifolds are shown to be a direct consequence of the quantum-level field-theory duality of the associated two-dimensional $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ models. This is demonstrated on both genus-0 and genus-1 world sheets.
