Cross‐Sectional Associations Between Gut Microbiota and Neuroimaging Changes in Post‐COVID‐19 Condition

open access: yesComprehensive Physiology, Volume 16, Issue 5, October 2026.
In patients with post‐COVID‐19 condition, a significant shift in gut microbiota composition can be observed, marked by a decrease in butyrate‐producing taxa. Relevant taxa correlate with clinical symptoms, structural and functional brain changes, which suggests potential therapeutic targets and highlight the need for further investigation in their ...

Similarities and differences in carotid artery, hemodynamic, and autonomic reactivity induced by mental stress or cold in adults: A randomized crossover study

open access: yesPhysiological Reports
The cold pressor test (CPT) is used to investigate cardiovascular and autonomic responses, while the Stroop color‐word test (Stroop) is also used for this purpose, although its vascular effects require further understanding.

No Influence of Sleep Quality and Chronotype on the Effects of Mental Fatigue: Evidence From an Exploratory Analysis

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Sport Science, Volume 26, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT A recent trial showed a negative impact of mental fatigue (MF) on subjective and behavioural outcomes. However, effects on physical performance outcomes were smaller than previously reported, possibly due to interindividual differences. To explore these differences, we examined whether sleep quality and chronotype modulate subjective and ...

DTI‐ALPS as a Biomarker of Small Vessel Disease Progression and Amyloid‐β in Normal Aging: A 3‐Year Longitudinal Study

open access: yesHuman Brain Mapping, Volume 47, Issue 14, October 1, 2026.
A higher DTI‐derived ALPS index relates cross‐sectionally to both quantitative and visual measures of SVD and is associated with short‐term amyloid‐β accumulation in cognitively normal older adults. Also, greater amyloid burden and choroid plexus volume are associated with a more rapid deterioration in global cognition and processing speed.

Does Dosage Drive Durability? A Longitudinal Study on Digital Cognitive Training for Sustained Functional Independence

open access: yesGeriatrics &Gerontology International, Volume 26, Issue 10, October 2026.
Randomized trial of 67 older adults comparing 10 h vs. 20 h cumulative digital cognitive training doses. Both show immediate gains but only the higher dose sustains long‐term functional benefits. ABSTRACT Background This study aimed to investigate whether a higher cumulative dose of digital cognitive training leads to greater and more sustained ...

All Is Relative—A Call for Considering “Physiologically Informed” Control Conditions to Improve the Mechanistic Understanding of the Effects of Physical Exercise on Cognition

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Psychology, Volume 67, Issue 5, Page 1246-1266, October 2026.
ABSTRACT There is a growing interest in elucidating the mechanisms that drive the benefits of physical exercise on cognitive performance. A key element for a better understanding of a particular phenomenon (e.g., the mediators of the exercise‐cognition interaction) is the selection of an appropriate control condition/group as the basis for causal ...
