Structured pseudospectra in structural engineering [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 2005
AbstractThis paper presents a new method for computing the pseudospectra of a matrix that respects a prescribed sparsity structure. The pseudospectrum is defined as the set of points in the complex plane to which an eigenvalue of the matrix can be shifted by a perturbation of a certain size.

Feature Engineering with Regularity Structures [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Scientific Computing, 2021
AbstractWe investigate the use of models from the theory of regularity structures as features in machine learning tasks. A model is a polynomial function of a space–time signal designed to well-approximate solutions to partial differential equations (PDEs), even in low regularity regimes.

Synergy between structural and architectural engineering: the point of view of the structural engineer [PDF]

open access: yesWIT Transactions on The Built Environment, 2014
Two departments of Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB), being the Department of Architectural Engineering (ARCH) and the Department of Mechanics of Materials and Constructions (MeMC), both in the Faculty of Engineering, are both scientifically active in various aspects of structural and architectural engineering.

Engineering the Electronic Structure of Graphene

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, 2012
AbstractGraphene exhibits many unique electronic properties owing to its linear dispersive electronic band structure around the Dirac point, making it one of the most studied materials in the last 5‐6 years. However, for many applications of graphene, further tuning its electronic band structure is necessary and has been extensively studied ever since ...

Engineered bamboo for structural applications

open access: yesConstruction and Building Materials, 2015
AbstractBamboo is a rapidly renewable material that has many applications in construction. Engineered bamboo products result from processing the raw bamboo culm into a laminated composite, similar to glue-laminated timber products. These products allow the material to be used in standardised sections and have less inherent variability than the natural ...

Lignin structure and its engineering

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Biotechnology, 2019
Studies on lignin structure and its engineering are inextricably and bidirectionally linked. Perturbations of genes on the lignin biosynthetic pathway may result in striking compositional and structural changes that in turn suggest novel approaches for altering lignin and even 'designing' the polymer to enhance its value or with a view toward its ...

Computational structural mechanics for engine structures [PDF]

open access: yes30th Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference, 1989
The computational structural mechanics (CSM) program at Lewis encompasses: (1) fundamental aspects for formulating and solving structural mechanics problems, and (2) development of integrated software systems to computationally simulate the performance/durability/life of engine structures. It is structured to mainly supplement, complement, and whenever

FAILURE LITERACY IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of International Structural Engineering and Construction, 2010
The history of the development of practice in many engineering disciplines is, in large part, the story of failures, both imminent and actual, and of the changes to designs, standards and procedures made as the result of timely interventions or forensic analyses.
