Metastasis on pause: How dormant tumor cells stay hidden within the tumor microenvironment and evade immune surveillance

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dormant cancer cells can hide in distant organs for years, evading treatment and the immune system. This review highlights how signals from the surrounding tissue and immune environment keep these cells inactive or trigger their reawakening. Understanding these mechanisms may help develop therapies to eliminate or control dormant cells and prevent ...

Clinical performance of the urine‐based TERT promoter AbsoluteQ Digital PCR for non‐invasive detection of bladder cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
A urine‐based digital PCR assay targeting two hotspot TERT promoter variants detected bladder cancer with high sensitivity and no false positives in this case–control cohort. The streamlined AbsoluteQ workflow outperformed Sanger sequencing and supports non‐invasive molecular testing for bladder cancer detection.

Case Report: Association of a rare single nucleotide variant in the KCNH2 gene with drug-induced QT prolongation

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics
BackgroundLong QT Syndrome (LQTS) is characterized by prolonged QT intervals on electrocardiogram, which may progress into life-threatening polymorphic ventricular tachycardia and sudden cardiac death. Variants in the KCNH2 gene have been associated with

Visualising Variants on Structure with Jalview

open access: yes, 2019
This was a 5 minute talk to describe the poster of the same title. Jalview is a free, open source Java workbench for working with sequence alignments and structures, available from http://www.jalview.org. The latest release of Jalview (2.11, July 2019) adds the ability to load genomic variant data from VCF (Variant Call Format) files ...

Cross-kingdom genomic variation in chicken gut microbiomes: insights from China’s diverse local breeds

open access: yesMicrobiome
Background The gut microbiome possesses substantial genetic diversity that supports microbial adaptation, but the genomic variation patterns across its prokaryotic and viral populations remain incompletely characterized.

dUTPase is essential in zebrafish development and possesses several single‐nucleotide variants with pronounced structural and functional consequences

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
dUTPases are involved in balancing the appropriate nucleotide pools. We showed that dUTPase is essential for normal development in zebrafish. The different zebrafish genomes contain several single‐nucleotide variations (SNPs) of the dut gene. One of the dUTPase variants displayed drastically lower protein stability and catalytic efficiency as compared ...

Polarization‐resolved femtosecond Vis/IR spectroscopy tailored for resolving weak signals in biological samples using minimal sample volume

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Unique biological samples, such as site‐specific mutant proteins, are available only in limited quantities. Here, we present a polarization‐resolved transient infrared spectroscopy setup with referencing to improve signal‐to‐noise tailored towards tracing small signals. We provide an overview of characterizing the excitation conditions for polarization‐

Multi‐omics and low‐input proteomics profiling reveals dynamic regulation driving pluripotency initiation in early mouse embryos

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Mouse pre‐implantation development involves a transition from totipotency to pluripotency. Integrating transcriptomics, epigenetic profiling, low‐input proteomics and functional assays, we show that eight‐cell embryos retain residual totipotency features, whereas cytoskeletal remodeling regulated by the ubiquitin‐proteasome system drives progression ...
