Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

First Total Synthesis of (–)-Merrillianin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
The first total synthesis of (–)-merrillianin (1), which is a natural sesquiterpene with a tri- fused structure having a cyclopentane ring and five- and seven-membered lactone parts, is demonstrated.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Wavelets for intonation modeling in HMM speech synthesis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The pitch contour in speech contains information about different linguistic units at several distinct temporal scales. At the finest level, the microprosodic cues are purely segmental in nature, whereas in the coarser time scales, lexical tones, word ...

Asymmetric Total Synthesis of (-)-Octahydro-1h- Benzofuro 3,2-E Isoquinoline, a Partial Structure of Morphine

open access: yes, 2009
Octahydro-1H-benzofuro[3,2-e]isoquinolines, which possess the ACNO partial structure of morphine, displayed potent oral analgesic and narcotic-antagonism activity.

Structure-Aware Shape Synthesis [PDF]

open access: yes2018 International Conference on 3D Vision (3DV), 2018
We propose a new procedure to guide training of a data-driven shape generative model using a structure-aware loss function. Complex 3D shapes often can be summarized using a coarsely defined structure which is consistent and robust across variety of observations.

Asymmetric radical carboesterification of dienes

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Stereocontrol of C–O bond formation from a carbon-based radical is very difficult due to the rapid inversion of the carbon radical. Here the authors present a method to form chiral esters from conjugated dienes with copper and chiral PyBox ligands ...

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the

Structured Synthesis for Probabilistic Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
We introduce the concept of structured synthesis for Markov decision processes where the structure is induced from finitely many pre-specified options for a system configuration. The resulting synthesis problem is in general a nonlinear programming problem (NLP) with integer variables.
