Between earth and sky. War architecture in Sardinia: a landscape to preserve
In the first years of the Second World War along the coast of Sardinia, a system of military defenses was built consisting essentially of bunkers and concrete batteries, many of which are still standing, as "testarde rovine" that resist the passage of ...

Despite frogs avoiding low temperatures, examination of four salamander species revealed that none avoided cold and all possessed cold tolerance. Functional analysis of TRPM8, a cold sensor, showed that all salamander TRPM8s had lost their cold sensitivity.

Solving rank structured Sylvester and Lyapunov equations
We consider the problem of efficiently solving Sylvester and Lyapunov equations of medium and large scale, in case of rank-structured data, i.e., when the coefficient matrices and the right-hand side have low-rank off-diagonal blocks.

RoundMi: A quantitative method to analyze mitochondrial morphology in mitotic cells
RoundMi is a workflow for rapid analysis of mitochondrial morphology in mitotic cells. By combining adaptive preprocessing with automated segmentation and quantification, it enables accurate measurements from single focal plane images, reducing acquisition time and computational demands while remaining compatible with high‐throughput fixed and live ...

Approximate structured singular value computation via Frobenius norms [PDF]
Two algorithms are presented to aid in the approximation of the structured singular value through minimization of the Frobenius norm. The first algorithm allows the uncertain terms to be complex. The second algorithm considers only real variations for real uncertain terms. An example problem is included, and advantages and disadvantages are discussed. >

Flight-determined stability analysis of multiple-input-multiple-output control systems [PDF]
Singular value analysis can give conservative stability margin results. Applying structure to the uncertainty can reduce this conservatism. This paper presents flight-determined stability margins for the X-29A lateral-directional, multiloop control ...

In this paper, as opposed to the random phase masks, the structured illuminations with a pixel-dependent deterministic phase shift are considered to derandomize the model setup. The RAAR algorithm is modified to adapt to two or more diffraction patterns,
