Recovery of Ammonia as Struvite from Anaerobic Digester Effluents

Environmental Technology, 2001
The effects of environmental conditions on ammonia removal as struvite (Magnesium ammonium phosphate, MAP) were studied in a laboratory scale batch reactor. MAP precipitation was carried out by adding phosphoric acid and magnesium source either as MgCl, or MgO. The effect of temperature, pH, MgN:P ratios were studied.

Recovery of phosphorus as struvite from sewage sludge ash

Journal of Environmental Sciences, 2012
Phosphorus (P) is an element vital for all living organisms, yet the world's reserves of phosphate rock are becoming depleted. This study investigated an effective P recovery method from sludge ash via struvite precipitation. Results showed that more than 95% of the total P content was extracted from sludge ash by applying 0.5 mol/L HCl at a liquid ...

Assesing the Potential for Struvite Recovery at Sewage Treatment Works

Environmental Technology, 2001
Struvite in wastewater treatment plants was identified as early as 1939. Problems with struvite formation date back to the 1960s when it was noticed at the Hyperion treatment plant, Los Angeles. Operators at the plant noticed crystalline deposits on the underside of post digestion screens.

Sorption of Chromium with Struvite During Phosphorus Recovery

Environmental Science & Technology, 2012
Struvite (MgNH(4)PO(4)·6H(2)O; MAP) precipitation is a viable means of phosphorus (P) recovery from animal and human wastes. The behavior of metal contaminants such as chromium (Cr) during struvite precipitation, however, requires consideration. Here the influence of both Cr concentration and oxidation state on sorption is assessed.

Microwave treatment and struvite recovery potential of dairy manure

Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part B, 2008
Microwave digestion of liquid dairy manure was tested for the release of nutrients, such as orthophosphates, ammonia-nitrogen, magnesium, calcium and potassium, both with and without the aid of an oxidizing agent (hydrogen peroxide). The orthophosphate to total phosphorus ratio of the manure increased from 21% to greater than 80% with 5 minutes of ...

CO2-assisted phosphorus extraction from poultry litter and selective recovery of struvite and potassium struvite

Water Research, 2018
Phosphorus recovery from industrialized poultry operations is necessary to ensure sustainable waste management and resource consumption. To realize these goals, an innovative, two-stage process chemistry has been developed to extract nutrients from poultry litter and recover value-added products.

Optimizing Struvite Production for Phosphate Recovery in WWTP

Journal of Environmental Engineering, 2008
Struvite, a crystalline structure comprised of ions of magnesium Mg +2 , ammonium NH4 -N , and phosphate PO4 -P ,i s commonly encountered in wastewater treatment plants WWTPs through struvite encrustation. The gradual accumulation of this crystal in pipes and fittings leads to high costs due to downtime and replacement of parts.

Phosphorus recovery from wastewater by struvite crystallization: Property of aggregates

Journal of Environmental Sciences, 2014
Struvite crystallization is a promising method to remove and recover phosphorus from wastewater to ease both the scarcity of phosphorus rock resources and water eutrophication worldwide. To date, although various kinds of reactor systems have been developed, supporting methods are required to control the struvite fines flushing out of the reactors.

Review on Phosphorus Recovery as Struvite from Wastewater

Key Engineering Materials
Wastewater treatment plants, particularly anaerobic digesters, face significant challenges related to the deposition of struvite, a mineral scale composed of magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate. The formation and accumulation of struvite can lead to blockages in the treatment system, reducing flow rates and overall plant efficiency.

Phosphorous recovery through struvite crystallization: Challenges for future design

Science of The Total Environment, 2019
Phosphorous (P) is an essential element for living organisms and is predicted to be depleted within the next 100 years. Across the world, significant phosphorous losses due to its low utilization efficiency become one of the main reasons for water pollution.
