Effects of organic substances on struvite crystallization and recovery

open access: yesDesalination and Water Treatment, 2016
AbstractThe effects of organic substances on struvite crystallization and recovery from synthetic wastewater were investigated. Experiments were completed during trials lasting 5 days using a pilot reactor with two concentric stainless steel meshes as seed material.

Recovering Critical Elements From Wastewater for Battery Materials: A Review

open access: yesRare Metals, Volume 45, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Driven by global carbon neutrality goals, the transition toward a circular economy and sustainable resource management has become increasingly imperative. Given the indispensable role of battery technologies in modern energy storage systems, strategic elements such as lithium (Li), cobalt (Co), and nickel (Ni)—identified by the European ...

Phosphorus Recovery from Wastewater in the Circular Economy: Focus on Struvite Crystallization

open access: yesBiomass
Phosphorus is an essential and finite resource critical for global food production, yet its inefficient use and discharge from wastewater systems contribute to eutrophication and resource depletion.

Optimization of mesophilic anaerobic digestion of a conventional activated sludge plant for sustainability

open access: yesAlexandria Engineering Journal, 2019
Potential of nutrient recovery as struvite (NH4MgPO4·6H2O) with sole waste activated sludge (WAS) of a conventional activated sludge treatment plant has been investigated using computational modelling supported by laboratory experiments.

Relative Agronomic Effectiveness of Struvite Phosphorus for Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium perenne) in Contrasting Grassland Soils

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, Volume 69, Issue 3, June 2026.
New Zealand grassland systems rely heavily on imported phosphorus (P), yet conventional water‐soluble fertilizers such as single superphosphate are used inefficiently and contribute to legacy P accumulation and water quality risks. Recovered P from wastewater, such as sparingly soluble struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O), offers a potentially more sustainable ...

Experimental study on the recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus from electroplating wastewater by struvite crystallization method

open access: yesGongye shui chuli
The nitrogen and phosphorus in electroplating wastewater were recovered using struvite crystallization method. The effects of pH, concentration of heavy metal ions and mass concentration of fluoride ions on the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus in ...

Evaluating the Impacts of ACP Management on the Energy Performance of Hydrothermal Liquefaction via Nutrient Recovery

open access: yesEnergies, 2019
Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is of interest in producing liquid fuels from organic waste, but the process also creates appreciable quantities of aqueous co-product (ACP) containing high concentrations of regulated wastewater pollutants (e.g., organic ...

A Nexus Analysis of Municipal Wastewater Treatment and Reuse for Agriculture and Sustainability: A Life Cycle Assessment

open access: yesSustainable Development, Volume 34, Issue 3, Page 4367-4385, June 2026.
ABSTRACT The sustainability of the wastewater treatment process relies on the capacity to maximize resource recovery while minimizing environmental impacts and cost. Treated wastewater reuse for agriculture has emerged as a potential solution to build resilience and sustainability.

Recovery of Phosphorus in Animal Wastewater by Struvite Forming [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biosystems Engineering, 2006
This study was carried out to recover phosphorus in animal wastewater using a magnesium source. , as a magnesium source, was shown a SP (soluble phosphorus) recovery rate of 98% in both the aeration and the NaOH tests to adjust pH around 8.5. In case of MgO, the recovery rate of SP were 88% with the aeration and 58% with the NaOH.

Techno‐Economic and Environmental Assessment of Magnesium‐Impregnated Rice Husk Biochar for Nutrient Removal: A Scale‐Up and Prospective Soil Application Approach

open access: yesWater Environment Research, Volume 98, Issue 6, June 2026.
A sequential system using magnesium‐impregnated rice husk biochar was evaluated through techno‐economic and life‐cycle assessment. The biochar first removes nitrate and phosphate from water and is then reused as a soil amendment, though high magnesium chloride costs constrain feasibility, highlighting the need for process optimization for large‐scale ...
