Fluorescent emission profiles reveal interspecific differences in three Danube River Basin sturgeon species [PDF]

Scientific Reports
Biofluorescence is widespread among marine teleosts but has not been reported in sturgeons (Acipenseridae). This exploratory study investigates interspecific differences in fluorescent emission profiles among three Danube River Basin sturgeon species ...

Unidirectional hybridization between American paddlefish Polyodon spathula (Walbaum, 1792) and sterlet Acipenser ruthenus (Linnaeus, 1758) [PDF]

PeerJ
Interspecific hybridizations among sturgeon species are feasible and often bidirectional. The American paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) from Family Polyodontidae and sturgeon species from Family Acipenseridae were reported capable of hybridization, but ...

Research tools to investigate movements, migrations, and life history of sturgeons (Acipenseridae), with an emphasis on marine-oriented populations. [PDF]

PLoS ONE, 2013
Worldwide, sturgeons (Acipenseridae) are among the most endangered fishes due to habitat degradation, overfishing, and inherent life history characteristics (long life span, late maturation, and infrequent spawning).

Multi‐Marker Mitochondrial Analysis Reveals Genetic Diversity and Phylogenetic Relationships of Black Sea Sturgeons (Acipenseridae) [PDF]

Ecology and Evolution
Sturgeons represent a critical taxon for conservation due to their complex genetic structure and vulnerability to anthropogenic pressures, including poaching, overfishing, and habitat loss. This study provides a multi‐level mitochondrial characterization

Investigation of Sexes and Fertility Potential of Female Russian Sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) and Male American Paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) Hybrids [PDF]

Life
In the present study, 10 allotriploid (3nALT) and 10 allopentaploid (5nALP) six-month-old hybrid fish and two 3nALT and four 5nALP 40-month-old hybrid fish, which resulted by crossing female Russian sturgeon Acipenser gueldenstaedtii (Brandt and ...

Cryoprotectant-specific alterations in the proteome of Siberian sturgeon spermatozoa induced by cryopreservation [PDF]

Scientific Reports
Cryopreservation is crucial for conserving genetic diversity in endangered species including the critically endangered group of sturgeons (Acipenseridae), but it can compromise sperm quality and protein profiles.

Marking fin spine of juvenile sturgeon (acipenseriformes: acipenseridae) using oxytetracycline and the comparing of growth performance

Arquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, 2021
This study aimed to describe and validate the formation of the rings in the spine of the pectoral fin and to determine the coherence of the OTC mark with the rings of three species of Caspian Sea sturgeon, the Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus), the ...

Conservation Status and Effectiveness of the National and International Policies for the Protection and Conservation of Sturgeons in the Danube River and Black Sea Basin

Diversity, 2023
Rivers and their watersheds have been subject to various changes, including biodiversity, caused by anthropogenic activities. The Danube River and Black Sea basin overlap the geographic range of six species of anadromous fish belonging to the family ...

Two New Sturgeon Species are Susceptible to Acipenser Iridovirus European (AcIV-E) Infection

Pathogens, 2020
We report the first case of Acipenser iridovirus European (AcIV-E) infection in starry sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus) and in sterlet (A. ruthenus) reared in Northern Italy. During 2018, mortality began in A. stellatus and A.
