Multiphase Tectonic Process With Slab Dynamics in the Northern East China Sea Shelf Basin

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
Megasequence 1 characterised by Palaeocene extension and differential subsidence driven by the rollback of the subducting Izanagi Plate. Megasequence 2 records a kinematic reorganisation of the East Asian margin, transition from a rifting to a compressional regime.

Detachment Fault‐Hosted Subduction Re‐Initiation of the (Ultra)Slow‐Spreading Western Neo‐Tethys in the Jurassic

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
Subduction initiation in oceans is key to understanding regional and global plate tectonics and ocean basin dynamics; however, its genetic mechanism is still enigmatic.

Magmatic fingerprints of subduction initiation and mature subduction: numerical modelling and observations from the Izu-Bonin-Mariana system

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science
Understanding the formation of new subduction zones is important because they have been proposed as the main driving mechanism for plate tectonics and they are crucial for geochemical cycles on Earth.

Reviewing subduction initiation and the origin of plate tectonics: What do we learn from present-day Earth?

open access: yesEarth and Planetary Physics, 2021
The theory of plate tectonics came together in the 1960s, achieving wide acceptance after 1968. Since then it has been the most successful framework for investigations of Earth’s evolution. Subduction of the oceanic lithosphere, as the engine that drives

Patterns of Late Cenozoic exhumation deduced from apatite and zircon U-He ages from Fiordland, New Zealand

open access: yes, 2005
New apatite and zircon (U-Th)/He ages from the Fiordland region of New Zealand's South Island expand on earlier results and provide new constraints on patterns of Late Cenozoic exhumation and cooling across this region.

Geochemical and Geological Investigation of Skarn‐Type Pb–Zn Mineralization in Hastanetepe (Balya‐Balıkesir, Türkiye): An Approach Based on Fluid Inclusions, Sulphur Isotopes and Geochemical Data

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
Integrated petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical data from the Hastanetepe Pb–Zn deposit (Balya, Türkiye) reveal multi‐stage hydrothermal alteration and a magmatic sulphur source. Fluid inclusion and sulphur isotope results indicate a complex fluid evolution responsible for skarn‐type Pb–Zn mineralization along limestone–dacite contacts ...

A tensile, flexural model for the initiation of subduction [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Journal International, 1996
We argue that subduction may be initiated at passive continental margins without shortening the lithosphere. Overcoming the lithosphere's high compressive strength requires special circumstances, and these make it difficult to explain the nearly complete recycling of old sea-floor.

A Miocene onset of the modern extensional regime in the Isparta Angle: constraints from the Yalvaç Basin (southwest Turkey)

open access: yes, 2016
The pre-Neogene Tauride fold-and-thrust belt, comprising Cretaceous ophiolites and metamorphic rocks and non-metamorphic carbonate thrust slices in southern Turkey, is flanked and overlain by Neogene sedimentary basins. These include poorly studied intra-

Late Pleistocene Volcanic Rocks From Tengchong Volcanic Field at SE Tibetan Plateau: Constraints on Petrogenesis and Mantle and Crustal Processes

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
Early zircon saturation and crystallisation occur in mafic (52–54 wt.% SiO2) lavas at Tengchong volcanic field. These early formed zircons with high δ18O (6.6‰–7.9‰) indicates mantle enrichment by subducted supracrustal materials. ABSTRACT Late Pleistocene (< 0.2 Ma) mafic and evolved volcanic rocks occur in northern Tengchong Volcanic Field, SE ...

Subduction Initiation by Plume‐Plateau Interaction: Insights From Numerical Models

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, 2020
It has recently been demonstrated that the interaction of a mantle plume with sufficiently old oceanic lithosphere can initiate subduction. However, the existence of large lithospheric heterogeneities, such as a buoyant plateau, in proximity to a rising ...
