Generation of Submesoscale Frontal Eddies in the Agulhas Current [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2019
AbstractThis study addresses the dynamics of the Agulhas inshore front in the submesoscale range upstream of 26° E. Submesoscale frontal eddies are observed in the vicinity of Port Elizabeth (26° E) from satellite images and in observations collected from underwater gliders.

Observation of submesoscale turbulence in a cyclonic eddy

Ocean Dynamics, 2020
In this study, we report results from a high-resolution measurement of submesoscale turbulence in a mesoscale eddy. The kinetic energy spectra in the mesoscale eddy are decomposed into mesoscale and submesoscale components using Helmholtz decomposition and wave-vortex decomposition methods.

Asymmetry of Submesoscale Instabilities in Anticyclonic and Cyclonic Eddies

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Abstract The upper‐ocean relative vorticity has been found to be cyclonically skewed, but altimetry observations indicate that long‐lifespan mesoscale eddies tend to be anticyclonic. We are thus interested in whether cyclonic or anticyclonic eddies are more unstable under similar circumstances.

Submesoscale Eddies in the White Sea Based on Satellite Radar Measurements

Izvestiya, Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics, 2021
This paper presents the results of the analysis of the archive of radar images of Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) and Radarsat-1,2 for the warm period of 2009–2012. For the first time surface manifestations of submesoscale eddies are mapped in the White Sea.The areas of persistent eddy activity as well as eddy characteristics are ...
