Production and Destruction of Eddy Kinetic Energy in Forced Submesoscale Eddy-Resolving Simulations [PDF]
Abstract We study the production and dissipation of the eddy kinetic energy (EKE) in a submesoscale eddy field forced with downfront winds using the Process Study Ocean Model (PSOM) with a horizontal grid resolution of 0.5 km. We simulate an idealized 100 m deep mixed-layer front initially in geostrophic balance with a jet in a domain that permits ...

From submesoscale ocean eddies to laboratory-scale turbulence
2012 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2012In our experience, as data from every deployment are processed and analyzed, new questions emerge. This implies that, even after decades of excellent work by many researchers, the use of high resolution thermal imaging to address the types of phenomena discussed here, and others, is still in fact at an early stage and will remain a fruitful field of ...

HF radar detects submesoscale spiral eddies in Monterey Bay
IGARSS 2003. 2003 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37477), 2004Shore based high-frequency Doppler radar observations are utilized for the reconstruction of high-resolution surface currents in Monterey Bay and off Monterey: meso-scale ageostrophic spiral eddies with scales equal to 10-20 km and lifetimes up to 6-12 hours.

Submesoscale eddies and sea ice interaction
2022<div> <p><span>The submesoscale has been defined dynamically as those processes with Rossby and Richardson numbers approaching O(1). This scale is of emerging interest within oceanography due to the role it plays in surface layer nutrient and tracer transport.

Deriving Velocity Fields of Submesoscale Eddies Using Multi-Sensor Imagery
IGARSS 2020 - 2020 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2020Small ocean eddies are observed in fine-resolution satellite imagery within the coastal regions and ice margins of the world's oceans. The derivation of surface velocity fields of these features would enable geophysical estimates of the kinematic energy contained within the eddies, leading to improved understanding of the role these eddies play in ...

Optimizing Numerical Models for Submesoscale Eddy Prediction
2016With the impending launch of the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite mission, unprecedented sea surface height (SSH) data is on the horizon bringing with it the ability to begin monitoring submescale eddies on a global scale. These eddies are known to play an integral role in mixed layer physics and are theorized to be important ...

Parameterizing Entrainment Induced by Submesoscale Eddies
Submesoscale eddies in the ocean surface layer are known to cause the restratification of the mixed-layer by converting the potential energy stored in the outcropping isopycnals into kinetic energy. Evidence of entrainment and subduction is found associated to submesoscale eddies, suggesting their importance for the biogeochemistry of the global ocean.Anna Lo Piccolo +5 more

Generation mechanism of an observed submesoscale eddy in the Chukchi Sea
Deep Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, 2019Abstract A submesoscale eddy was detected by satellite in the summer Chukchi Sea, which was generated by the salinity front slump. Multiple reanalysis data suggested that the front was generated as a result of denser water transport northward. The whole story can be separated into two stages: front genesis and eddy genesis (front slump).

Submesoscale eddies and their potential for buoyant microplastic accumulation
Eddies are ubiquitous throughout the world oceans, and represent a mechanism for transport and re-distribution of particles such as microplastics trapped within. While much research is devoted to plastic distribution at the ocean surface and near-surface, very little is known about their subsurface distribution.openaire +2 more sources
Satellite Remote Sensing of Submesoscale Eddies in the Russian Seas
2018Satellite images of high resolution, primarily radar images, have shown that submesoscale eddies (diameter less than the Rossby internal radius of deformation) are a common element of water dynamics of the inner Russian seas (the Black, Caspian, Baltic, and White). Characteristic diameters of these eddies are 2–8 km.
