Multiscale simulations of Langmuir cells and submesoscale eddies using XSEDE resources

Proceedings of the 1st Conference of the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment: Bridging from the eXtreme to the campus and beyond, 2012
A proper treatment of upper ocean mixing is an essential part of accurate climate modeling. This problem is difficult because the upper ocean is home to many competing processes. Vertical turbulent mixing acts to unstratify the water column, while lateral submesoscale eddies attempt to stratify the column. Langmuir turbulence, which often dominates the

Submesoscale eddies seen by spaceborne radar

2013
In the present study, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery was used to derive statistics on spiral eddies in the eastern Mediterranean and Black seas. The dataset used consists of about 1700 medium resolution Envisat ASAR and ERS-2 SAR images obtained in 2009-2011.

Spectral Decomposition of Frontal Submesoscale Dynamics and Eddy Splitting

Submesoscale dynamics play a crucial role in vertical transport and energy redistribution in the upper ocean but remain challenging to observe due to their small spatial and temporal scales. Spectral Helmholtz decomposition of velocity from a shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler allows examination of the scale- and depth-dependent partitioning ...

Submesoscale mixed layer eddy and sea ice interaction

Oceanic submesoscale mixed layer eddies (SMLEs) are 0.1-10 km in horizontal scale and are ubiquitous in the global ocean. They are of emerging interest within oceanography due to the key role they play in surface layer tracer transport. In this thesis, the impacts of SMLEs on sea ice cover and air-sea interaction in polar regions are investigated ...

Revealing the submesoscale structure of subthermocline eddies in the North East Pacific

The california undercurrent in the Northeast Pacific interacts with the shelf break creating instabilities associated with the generation of sub surface eddies called Cuddies. These subthermocline eddies are key agents in offshore transport of heat, salt, oxygen and nutrients, yet their limited surface expression has historically hindered their ...
