Progress in Research of Submesoscale Processes in the South China Sea

Acta Oceanologica Sinica, 2020
This paper overviews research progress in observation, theoretical analysis and numerical modeling of submesoscale dynamic processes in the South China Sea (SCS) particularly during recent five years. The submesoscale processes are defined according to both spatial and dynamic scales, and divided into four subcategories as submesoscale waves ...

Submesoscale processes and dynamics

2008
Increased spatial resolution in recent observations and modeling has revealed a richness of structure and processes on lateral scales of a kilometer in the upper ocean. Processes at this scale, termed submesoscale, are distinguished by order one Rossby and Richardson numbers; their dynamics are distinct from those of the largely quasi-geostrophic ...

Submesoscale Processes in the Northern Red Sea: Insights From Underwater Glider Observations

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans
The critical role of oceanic submesoscale currents in promoting energy cascade and modulating biogeochemical processes as well as the heat budget in the upper ocean has gained wide recognition.

The Observed Seasonal Cycle of Submesoscale Processes in the Antarctic Marginal Ice Zone [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2020
Abstract Submesoscale flows are energetic processes in the upper ocean that occur at scales of a few kilometers. These phenomena are important to climate because they can strongly impact vertical motions of heat, carbon, and biogeochemical properties between the surface and deep ocean. Their presence and magnitude

Seasonality of Submesoscale processes in the Bay of Bengal

2020
<p>Mesoscale eddies that known as a dominant reservoir of kinetic energy has been studied extensively for its dynamics and variation. In order to maintain energy budget equilibrium, the energy stored in mesoscale eddies is dissipated by small scale processes around centimeters.Submesoscale processes that lie between mesoscale and ...

Submesoscale processes in the Baltic Sea

2023

Coastal and Submesoscale Process Studies for ASIRI

2013
Abstract : Our over-arching objective is to gain an understanding of upper ocean processes and air-sea interaction in the Bay of Bengal. This, in the long run, would contribute toward improving the intra-seasonal Monsoonal forecast in ocean-atmosphere coupled models. Several specific goals are listed below.1.

Submesoscale Processes Associated With the East India Coastal Current

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans
AbstractSeasonal variations and generation mechanisms of the submesoscale features associated with the East India Coastal Current (EICC) are investigated using a high resolution (1 km) regional ocean model set up for the Bay of Bengal (BoB) during 2012–2013.

Submesoscale Processes Fueled by the Kuroshio in the Tokara Strait

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans
AbstractSubmesoscale processes are essential in balancing global oceanic energy cascades and stimulating air–sea communications. However, measurements of submesoscale turbulence are still not acquired easily. Based on long‐term (2003–2012) shipboard current observations, we obtained direct evidence of considerable submesoscale energization in the ...

Submesoscale Processes in the Coastal Margins of the Strait of Gibraltar. The Trafalgar – Alboran Connection

Progress in Oceanography, 2020
Abstract The present manuscript analyses the role of the submesoscale hydrodynamic patterns close to the coastal margin of the Strait of Gibraltar in the exchange of properties between the western side of the Strait and the western Alboran Sea. To achieve this goal a multi-approach analysis was performed using several datasets obtained during an ...
