The spatiotemporal features of submesoscale processes in the northeastern South China Sea

Acta Oceanologica Sinica, 2018
The spatiotemporal features of submesoscale processes (SMPs) in the northeastern South China Sea (SCS) are analyzed based on a high-resolution simulation from 2009 to 2012. The simulation results show that the SMPs with a vertical relative vorticity that matches the local planetary vorticity are ubiquitous in the upper ocean of the northeastern SCS ...

Mesoscale to Submesoscale Transition in the California Current System. Part II: Frontal Processes

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 2008
Abstract This is the second of three papers investigating the regime transition that occurs in numerical simulations for an idealized, equilibrium, subtropical, eastern boundary, upwelling current system similar to the California Current.

Use of an AUV to Quantify Submesoscale Mixing Processes

2009
Abstract : This project provided planning support to attend meetings and perform preliminary calculations for the ONR DRI Scalable Lateral Mixing and Coherent Turbulence project "Use of an AUV to Quantify Submesoscale Mixing Processes" which commenced in FY 09.

Regional turbulence patterns driven by meso- and submesoscale processes in the Caribbean Sea

Ocean Dynamics, 2017
The surface ocean circulation in the Caribbean Sea is characterized by the interaction between anticyclonic eddies and the Caribbean Upwelling System (CUS). These interactions lead to instabilities that modulate the transfer of kinetic energy up- or down-cascade.

Resolving submesoscale processes and cross-scale interactions in the Gulf of Oman

2020
<p>The physical dynamics of the Sea of Oman are well resolved on meso- and basin-scales. The most prominent features are the slope current of the Persian Gulf Water (PGW), an energetic field of persistent eddies and circulation driven by seasonal monsoon wind regimes.

The Role of Submesoscale Processes in the Decay of Agulhas Rings

Fine-scale ocean processes (1–100 km) are central to global ocean circulation, water mass transformation, and the long-range transport of tracers such as heat and carbon. The Agulhas Current system and the Cape Basin are hotspots for such dynamics, where mesoscale and submesoscale flows interact strongly.
