Cholinergic neurons in the rat substantia nigra
Neuroscience Letters, 1986The distribution of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT)-like immunoreactivity (LI), demonstrated according to an avidin-biotin procedure, was evaluated in the substantia nigra (SN) of rats. Although ChAT positivity was considerably less in the nigral neuropil than in the interpeduncular nucleus, it was also higher, particularly in caudal pars reticulata ...

The striatum and substantia nigra: A commentary on their relationships
Neuroscience, 1979Publisher Summary The greatest focus of attention in recent years regarding the functions of the basal ganglia has been given to examining the interrelationships between the striatum (caudate and putamen) and the substantia nigra . These structures, like others of the basal ganglia, are involved in the control of posture and locomotion, the ...

Mitochondrial DNA polymorphism in substantia nigra
Journal of the Neurological Sciences, 1996Inefficiencies in mitochondrial respiration mainly affecting complex I and IV activities, occur with increasing age and have been suggested as a possible etiological factor in age-related neurodegenerative diseases. It has been suggested that this finding may be explained by an accumulation of mtDNA mutations.

HEMIPARKINSONISM WITH INFARCTION OF THE IPSILATERAL SUBSTANTIA NIGRA
Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology, 1978An elderly man suffering from dementia associated with hypertension developed right‐sided parkinsonism marked by rigidity and flexion. At autopsy the brain showed generalized vascular changes chiefly in the white matter, diffuse plaque and neurofibrillary tangle formation in the temporal cortex, and a discrete gliotic scar in the right substantia nigra.

Ontogeny of Substantia Nigra Dopamine Neurons
2009Understanding the ontogeny of A9 dopamine (DA) neurons is critical not only to determining basic developmental events that facilitate the emergence of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) but also to the extraction and de novo generation of DA neurons as a potential cell therapy for Parkinson's disease.

Efferent connections of the substantia nigra in the cat
Experimental Neurology, 1965Abstract Stereotaxic lesions were discretely placed in the substantia nigra in five cats. Fiber degeneration was studied using the Nauta-Gygax technique. The findings suggest that the greatest efferent outflow of the substantia nigra is to the ipsilateral midbrain tegmentum and tectum. Other degenerating fibers and preterminal branchings were seen in

Neurogenesis in Substantia Nigra of Parkinsonian Brains?
2009The clinical motor dysfunction in Parkinson's disease is primarily the consequence of a progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra of the nigrostriatal pathway. The degeneration of this tract provokes a depletion of dopamine in the striatum, where it is required as a permissive factor for normal motor function.

The Substantia Nigra Pars Reticulata
2016The GABAergic projection neurons are the main neuron type in the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr). A striking feature of these SNr GABA neurons is that they fire sustained, spontaneous high frequency spikes and thus tonically inhibit their targets.
