Efferent connections of the substantia nigra in the cat

Experimental Neurology, 1965
Abstract Stereotaxic lesions were discretely placed in the substantia nigra in five cats. Fiber degeneration was studied using the Nauta-Gygax technique. The findings suggest that the greatest efferent outflow of the substantia nigra is to the ipsilateral midbrain tegmentum and tectum. Other degenerating fibers and preterminal branchings were seen in

On the question of apoptosis in the parkinsonian substantia nigra

Acta Neuropathologica, 1997
Apoptosis has been postulated as a mechanism of nerve cell death in Parkinson's disease. In the present study, the substantia nigra of 22 neuropathologically confirmed Parkinson cases and 8 control brains was studied using the in situ end-labeling (TUNEL) method.

Neurogenesis in Substantia Nigra of Parkinsonian Brains?

2009
The clinical motor dysfunction in Parkinson's disease is primarily the consequence of a progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra of the nigrostriatal pathway. The degeneration of this tract provokes a depletion of dopamine in the striatum, where it is required as a permissive factor for normal motor function.

The Substantia Nigra Pars Reticulata

2016
The GABAergic projection neurons are the main neuron type in the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr). A striking feature of these SNr GABA neurons is that they fire sustained, spontaneous high frequency spikes and thus tonically inhibit their targets.
