Surface Adhesion Engineering for Armored Metasurfaces and Beyond

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 1, 5 January 2026.
Targeting primary causes of dysfunctionality in optical systems, an “armored” metasurface is developed based on Persson's model and Hertzian theory, enabling anti‐dust, anti‐scratch, anti‐impact, and anti‐water, heat resistance capabilities, alongside excellent optical antireflection performance.

A Scalable and Integrated Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, Volume 12, Issue 1, 7 January 2026.
A scalable X‐band reconfigurable intelligent surface is presented using one‐bit phase‐tunable unit cells with integrated FPGA control. The RIS supports fast, high‐speed reconfiguration through WiFi, LAN, and USB interfaces and can be scaled to multiple tiles. The design achieves over 20 dBi broadside gain and reliable 2D beam steering in both elevation

Is Computing with Light All You Need? A Perspective on Codesign for Optical Artificial Intelligence and Scientific Computing

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 8, Issue 1, January 2026.
This perspective article considers what computations optical computing can and should enable. Focusing upon free‐space optical computing, it argues that a codesign approach whereby materials, devices, architectures, and algorithms are simultaneously optimized is needed.

Enhanced Rabi Splitting of Exciton‐Polaritons and Plasmon‐Polaritons in Lithium Niobate Metasurface

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, Volume 20, Issue 1, 8 January 2026.
This study presents an ultrathin lithium niobate metasurface capable of inducing highly sensitive Fano‐shaped resonances, enabling strong coupling with TMDC monolayers and plasmonic metamaterials/metasurfaces. Adjustable Q‐factors lead to controllable coupling strengths, achieving substantial Rabi splitting.

Ultra‐Compact Broadband Spot Size Converter Using Metamaterial Cell‐Based Inverse Design

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, Volume 20, Issue 2, 22 January 2026.
Inverse design techniques are combined with subwavelength structures to design a compact, high‐performance spot size converter. A cell‐based topology is proposed, where each cell is composed of an equivalent homogenous metamaterial, resulting in a reduced parameter that speeds up optimization.
