G-Protein-Coupled Receptor 91-Dependent Signalling Does Not Influence Vascular Inflammation and Atherosclerosis in Hyperlipidaemic Mice

open access: yesCells, 2023
The TCA cycle intermediate metabolite ‘succinate’ has been proposed as an inflammatory mediator, influencing autoimmunity and allergic reactions, through ligation to its sensing receptor SUCNR1/GPR91.

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

Shape‐Morphing Nanoengineered Hydrogel Ribbons as Hemostats

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a self‐assembling, shape‐morphing nanoengineered hydrogel ribbon system that rapidly forms porous aggregates in situ for efficient hemostasis in trauma and surgical applications. Abstract Rapid and effective hemorrhage control remains a major challenge in trauma and surgical care, particularly for complex or noncompressible wounds.

Substrate Gas Utilization and C3/C4 Metabolic Analysis of Actinobacillus succinogenes: Integration into a Model for Fermentation Prediction in BES

open access: yesFermentation
The aim of this work is to study the metabolism of Actinobacillus succinogenes in greater detail with the aim of optimizing succinate production and creating a metabolic model. The inhibitory properties of various substances were first investigated.

Robust and Reversible Thermofluorescence in Solvent‐Free Thermoplastic Polyurethane Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Thermofluorescent polymer composites with high‐contrast optical outputs are prepared by solvent‐free blending of indenoquinacridone dye into a thermoplastic polyurethane matrix. The temperature‐dependent fluorescence originates from aggregation–dissociation of the dye molecules, regulated by competing hydrogen bonds from the polymer matrix.

Elevated circulating levels of succinate in human obesity are linked to specific gut microbiota

open access: yesThe ISME Journal, 2018
Gut microbiota-related metabolites are potential clinical biomarkers for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Circulating succinate, a metabolite produced by both microbiota and the host, is increased in hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.

Microbial interaction between the succinate‐utilizing bacterium Phascolarctobacterium faecium and the gut commensal Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, 2020
A large variety of microbes are present in the human gut, some of which are considered to interact with each other. Most of these interactions involve bacterial metabolites.

A Hierarchically Structured, Stretchable, Anti‐Biofouling Encapsulation for Biodegradable Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A soft, stretchable, anti‐biofouling encapsulant is developed by integrating organosilicon nanowire networks with microstructured biodegradable elastomers. The hierarchical surface exhibits superhydrophobicity and enhances water barrier properties by 420% over pristine polymers, while preserving mechanical integrity.

Mechanism of succinate efflux upon reperfusion of the ischaemic heart

open access: yesCardiovascular Research, 2020
Aims  Succinate accumulates several-fold in the ischaemic heart and is then rapidly oxidized upon reperfusion, contributing to reactive oxygen species production by mitochondria.

Techno‐Economic Analysis of Polylactic Acid from Corn Stover: Understanding Uncertainty and Variability via Artificial Intelligence Tools

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, EarlyView.
This study analyses the uncertainty and variability existing in the economic performance of polylactic acid (PLA) production, via integrating techno‐economic analysis with process models and Monte Carlo simulation enabled by artificial intelligence. The results show that the minimum selling price varies from $2,107 to $3076/t PLA.
