Putative Peripheral Neuropathy in Suckling Piglets

Journal of Veterinary Medicine, Series B, 2000
SummaryOver a period of almost 2 years, a progressive motor disturbance was found to occur in 20–50 % of the litters of both primiparous and multiparous sows in a large pig herd of 1000 sows. The motor disturbance sometimes affected the entire litter; however, in most cases only a few piglets per litter were affected. The clinical signs appeared at 3–5

Transfer of maternal haptoglobin to suckling piglets

Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology, 2011
The acute phase protein haptoglobin (Hp) exerts immune modulating functions in the innate and adaptive immune system. In pigs, serum Hp concentrations are linked to impaired growth performance. There is little information on Hp in newborn piglets and the onset of endogenous Hp synthesis.

Growth of suckling piglets in litters standardized by weight

Journal of Animal Science, 2014
This study examined the relationship between birth weight and growth performance when suckling piglets were reared in litters standardized by birth weight. Forty-four gilts (Landrace × Large White) due to farrow during the same week were selected. Piglets born to those gilts were individually weighed at birth and cross-fostered to obtain litters with ...

Metabolic Rate of Piglets between Sucklings

1987
Thirteen measurements have been made to determine the heat production of piglets (1 to 20 days of age) at various times after suckling. Heat production was measured in an indirect calorimeter of 0.085 m3 with 2 animals (1 to 4 days of age) or individual animals (after 4 days of age). They were allowed to suckle about each hour.

Occurrence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in suckling piglets in Norway

Veterinary Parasitology, 2007
Faecal samples from 684 litters of suckling piglets from 100 indoor swine herds from all regions of Norway were examined for the presence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia, using sucrose gradient flotation concentration and immunofluorescent staining. Thirty-one (31%) herds and 57 (8.3%) litters tested positive for Cryptosporidium, while 10 (1.5%) litters

Suckling and teat disputes by neonatal piglets

Applied Animal Behaviour Science, 1989
Abstract To study the development of cyclic suckling behaviour and to examine the role of overt fighting in competition during suckling, we observed piglets from 29 litters during the first hours after birth. First- and second-born piglets usually suckled for the first time on a posterior teat, but this tendency was not apparent for later born ...

An ethogram of piglet vocalizations during suckling

Applied Animal Ethology, 1984
Abstract There is obvious confusion in the literature on pig vocalizations. It is not clear whether pig calls are discrete or continuous in form and function, and whether they are specific signals. The aim with this study was to try to classify piglet vocalizations uttered during nursing, and the hypothesis was that the sounds are, in fact ...

Glucose and urea levels in suckling piglets

Comparative Clinical Pathology, 2019
A description of physiological and biochemical parameters in suckling piglets is important for identifying suitable management methods according to current realities of commercial swine management. Therefore, the aim of this study was to measure plasma glucose and urea levels in suckling piglets on the first days of life.
